I want to start by saying Dr. Juvonen is quite possibly the best professor I have had at UCLA. She is so caring and genuinely wants to see us all succeed. I genuinely had no idea where my research was going before this class and she taught us how to conduct and present research in such an organized manner that honestly streamlined the process very well. The topics covered and the teaching/learning methods used were super useful for our research skills development, professional development and group contributions. I would not change anything about this process. I would just have liked this class to be twice a week for 2 hours each instead of once a week for 3 hours because I believe we could've used the extra time productively with healthy discussions and more time for professional advice towards the end of the quarter. BUT the 3 hour chunk was never boring and I never got tired. I always had more to contribute in class. Thank you Dr. Juvonen for making this my favourite class this quarter and probably the most useful class I will ever take at UCLA!!!
This course was challenging in the best way. Doing independent research can be daunting, but this seminar prepares for every step of the process.
From writing abstracts to designing posters, writing cvs to preparing presentations, I am so so grateful that I was able to take this course and practice all of these skills in such a wonderful environment full of helpful and encouraging peers and a professor who cares.
Dr. Juvonen was an amazing professor, and the activities for this seminar (groupwork and feedback in class, independent work outside of class) kept me on track for research and allowed me to apply to PURC this year, which I would not have been nearly as prepared for otherwise.
Guest speaker lectures were helpful as they gave additional insight into things like personal statements or how to give better presentations, how to present data.
Overall, her course allowed for a really tight-knit, collaborative group.
I really feel lucky to have been part of this course, as the skills I gained and feedback I got made me feel more confident as a researcher.
