I was told Speer was supposed to be the best but I didn't see it. he's not terrible but he didn't live up to the hype
Overall, this was a pretty good class. Political power, wealth inequality, gender inequality, etc are all discussed and honestly most of it you probably already know. You have weekly homework assignments where you have to do the readings and answer around 8 written questions, but they were graded on completion. Midterm and final were honestly really easy, for both it was 20 multiple choice and 5 short answer questions. The only thing that was slightly tricky was the final paper where it was based on one of the readings and you had to agree or disagree with it, but it was nothing too bad as long as you take your time on it. Professor Speer is so helpful and his lectures are very clear and understandable, you can tell he takes the time to make sure his students succeed :)
also ta benjamin is the besttt
Love professor speer! As others have said, the workload is fair but it is so straightforward that it makes it easy to do the tests, etc.,
a big fat smooch for professor speer. You're doing great mama, love youuuuu
Tip: do the homework, would help you out with the tests so much
This was an enjoyable class to take. Professor Speer is patient, accommodating, and presents the material in a clear manner. His assignments are pretty writing heavy which is expected when it comes to Sociology classes, but the workload is manageable. He is also rather opinionated which makes his lectures interesting and funny. I would try and take one of his classes if you can.
This class definitely deserves a better rating on bruinwalk!!! Wouldn't call this an easy class but as long as you put some effort into this class you will definitely do okay. Speer is very knowledgeable, clear and approachable. While not the most engaging, I enjoyed learning about the material of this class and would recommend it. There is a midterm and final, discussion participation grade, weekly homework assignments (they help A LOT for the exams) and a final paper (literature review). This was a very very fair class and I would not mind taking a class with Speer again.
Speer taught Sociology 185 based on inequalities within American society. We were graded on homework assignments (T.A. checks them for completion in discussion section), participation in discussion section (we go over the homework assignments), a research paper (literature review), then a midterm and final, and course evals. The homework assignments are timely to do since we are given around 50+ pages to read a week, but they are helpful for the tests to study. The midterm/final are fair and easy if you study. Lecture can get borings at times but overall were clear. Ultimately I believe this is a class everyone should take because it really does open your eyes to the inequalities within American society. I'd say it is fairly an easy class just as long as you stay engaged, attend lecture, and study.
