Professor Dosamantes-Beaudry should not be teaching at UCLA. She is outright rude to students, continually interrupting presentations and comments just because she happens to think of something at that particular moment. She made some pretty offensive statements, which I found to be ironic considering this is a WAC class. I went into this class with such high hopes because I was very much interested in the subject matter. She is a very boring lecturer, reading from her notes while sitting in a chair. An easy A... yes! but at what cost.

I'm so confused by the ratings below. I truly enjoyed this class, Frida Kahlo: A Cultural Icon. Truthfully, we didn't touch upon Frida Kahlo material until after fifth week but the first half of the quarter was still very intriguing. We covered Mexican history up until then. Class discussions are interspersed with assigned readings which I found to be thoughtfully selected and very interesting. The second half of the course focuses on Frida and her life, using essays written by Dosamantes-Beaudry as the main reference. Her articles are really well written and informative! There is no midterm, no final, no tests, no pop quizzes on whether or not you read. Attendance is taken every day and does effect your grade. A lot of times she lets the class out early - I'm talking like 30-40 minutes some days - instead of finding meaningless material to take up the full time. Your grade is based heavily on attendance, a midterm 8-10page paper and final paper. As long as you follow her easy rubric in the syllabus, you'll get an A on your papers. You can get an A easily but I still felt like I learned a lot. She's not an extremely personable professor, but she does know her stuff and if you read and participate you'll get a lot out of this class too. If you get the chance, I'd absolutely recommend you take it. I looked forward to going every single day. AND it's FIVE UNITS.
