Such a great professor. She doesn't use lecture slides so be prepared for that, but she speaks so well and she's funny along with captivating. So if you go to lecture and listen along and take notes you'll be fine. There's a huge group project and paper, but that's just how 100B is structured so it doesn't really matter which professor you take for that reason. She's pretty great, but the class depends on your TA. Your grade is like 100% dependent on your TA, so if your TA seems stupid or mean, switch to a new one. Your TA grades all aspects of your paper so get a good one cause your paper is worth a large portion of your grade.
Firstenberg as a lecturer is great. She's veryyy clear and gives plenty of examples. She doesn't give straight definitions, though, so you may have to look those up yourself if you grasp content better that way. Doesn't use powerpoints so you have to take good notes. The book isn't necessary, but I'd buy an older version just to read up on concepts she goes over in class (you don't really need to know all the minute details). Tests are multiple choice, mostly lecture based, with very few random questions from the book. Use the practice exams as a guide to how sneaky some questions can be, really have to know your stuff to be able to answer those.
The lab part of this class is what makes up a lot of your grade. Hopefully you have a good lab TA. You submit assignments related to writing a research paper every few weeks. Quizzes based on lecture every few weeks. A group project where you have to make up an experiment based on an article they give. They're very nitpicky but each lab is curved.
100B can be a very tough course if you are not expecting the sheer amount of work that goes into the class. Its a 6 unit class for a reason: it will take over your quarter. That being said, it is a great class to see if people are interested in the research-heavy aspects of psychology. Dr. Firstenberg's lectures are quite good, even if she dosen't use slides. I feel that if I put in more work, my grade would have improved. So learn from my mistake, and PUT IN THE TIME
Despite what the below post said, this class depends 100% on your TA. Marcos Mechana is THE WORST TA DO NOT TAKE HIM. He has a stutter, knows nothing about the lecture material as he is a political science graduate and has little to no psychology knowledge, he speaks extremely slowly and is SO repetitive. His grading is completely random and pointless, he won't even show you where he takes off points he just does. The head TAs TELL the other TAs to make the average grade on the papers a 50%, so all TAs go wayyy overboard on taking off points, it's very frustrating.
Unless you get 100% on both midterms (which you won't since the questions are written with the sole purpose of confusing you), your grade WILL depend on your TA and his or her mood the day he/she is grading your papers. HATED this class. Such EASY MATERIAL that was made so difficult, it is the most frustrating class you will take for the psychology major. But it's do-able
Dr. Firstenberg is one of the best faculty members at the UCLA Department of Psychology. As the previous poster stated, this class is not the nightmare that it appears to be at the beginning. Basically, you are learning a different form of thinking and a different way of writing. In the lecture, you will be tested on your ability to apply concepts to both fair as well as a few tricky exam questions. However, if you study and actually read the book, you should have a shot at an A.
In the lab section, you are graded on ho much you can adhere to APA guidelines. Contrary to popular belief, you have a good chance of getting an A even with a "bad" TA. Spend a lot of time revising--I revised papers 5-7 times--and it should not be a problem. It is a very different, clear, non-flowery, form of technical writing. I earned an A in the course.
Contrary to what you hair, 100B is not impossible. It is very doable. Firstenberg makes lectures fun and enjoyable, so you won't have to dread coming to class. However, most of your grade does depend on your TA. They are the ones that grade all your papers and work. They are also the ones that give you all of the instructions on how to write your papers, so make sure to get a good TA if possible. To get an A you do have to work hard, but all of the work IS doable. I think this class has an undeserved reputation. NO, it is not a "weeder" class. It's just the class that you will take that has a lot of technical information in it to prepare you for your psychology career. I do think it's easier than 100A. Have no fear!
Do NOT fear. 100B is way easier than 100A. Although you MUST work hard for that A. Memorize lectures and UNDERSTAND the concepts. Go to office hours and read about the concepts Firstenberg explains in class. The catch with this class is the T.A. Make sure you have a good one since the beginning because they can either make you or break you. I ended up getting an A-.
