Quarter: Fall 2022
Grade: A
July 31, 2023

Dr. Pham is the best professor I've ever had at UCLA. He's funny and makes biology interesting and engaging! I have never had trouble understanding him. In fact, he explains concepts so thoroughly and with so much patience that he helped make even the more challenging concepts digestible for me. 7A is relatively easygoing compared to the other classes in the 7 series because your test grades are composed of an individual and group phase that are weighted equally. This helps a lot and allows for a good margin of error on the individual phase. There's ample extra credit, too; I always chose the comic option where you get to draw a biology related comic, and I honestly had fun doing it. Being able to draw something for credit was a nice break during busy weeks.

Professor Pham is an incredibly knowledgable, caring, and engaging professor. He knows all the content extremely well, always checks in during the lectures to make sure that all students are understanding, and offers various opportunities to seek help and ask him questions. Professor Pham was extremely clear and understandable, and just overall a genuinely great guy.
The way the LS 7A class is structured/formatted is standardized across all the professors, so all the following information has nothing to do with Pham himself, but rather just how the class is like. Overall, the LS 7A class was quite easy and forgiving. There are a lot of completion points simply for doing easy work like pre-class assignments and discussion worksheets. Additionally, there was a lot of extra credit given this quarter - 16 points worth (more than a 2% bump if you do all of it). There were 3 tests ("Assessments of Learning") throughout the quarter - can be thought of as 2 midterms and a final. These "AOLs" were online (through Canvas) and multiple choice. The AOLs were difficult because the questions were often phrased quite vaguely and there seemed to be multiple correct answers; additionally, sometimes there were also typos in the questions which caused more confusion. While each AOL definitely had at least 5-10 "suspicious" questions, the class is overall still an easy A just because of the way it is structured with all the fluff points and extra credit.
Overall, Professor Pham is awesome! The LS 7A class was mostly good as well - should be an easy A as long as you do all the work, although the 3 AOLs will be tough.

Professor Pham is one of my favorite professors that I had last quarter. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and he is always a very helpful resource. This class has a lot of pre-class work of taking notes and reading on LaunchPad, it is a lot of work but it's manageable. The 7 series tests are pretty challenging, but an A is definitely attainable in this class.

I was super stoked to take this class because Pham has one of the highest ratings for this course, however I felt a little disappointed. His accent + the mic + his mask made it very hard to understand him, and although that's an uncontrollable situation, I found that if I zoned out for 2 seconds I could no longer follow along. As someone who sometimes struggles with maintaining focus for extensive periods of time, I ended up learning more from my TA and review sessions than I did actual lectures.

This class was still very interesting and there were still a lot of extra credit opportunities to help bump final grades up. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! You won't regret it; grades are based on total points, so those extra few points can make or break your grade.

He is popular for a reason. Best thing about him is that his class and especially the review sessions are organized and timely. He cares about students in OHs too. Great professor. Homework and stuff should be all the same regardless who you take.

This class is def very content-heavy, and focuses on cell and molecular bio and can get confusing and difficult if you don't have a strong foothold in it from high school + don't consistently study and figure out your weak spots. Exams have individual and group phases and your final grade for those are the averages, so that should def help your grade if your group is good (mine was and I ended up getting very close to perfect on the group section). Pham is amazing and super nice and responsive to emails. To succeed in this class: DO NO FALL BEHIND. It's really hard to get back on track and there's so much content to learn. The grading scheme for this class makes it easier to get an A, so as long as you understand the Launchpad + Launchpad quiz/exams, Clickers, Discussion, and PLF sheets, you are more than prepared to do really well in this class. Good luck!

Dr. Pham is a fantastic professor who cares deeply about his students and their success. His lectures are engaging and complete with cute anecdotes about his wife, and he is more than accommodating when the need arises. Whenever students have questions during lectures, Dr. Pham will answer the question in depth or invite others in the class to try to help, but makes sure that the student who asked the question understood before moving on. He offers many extra credit opportunities to boost your grade, and the group portions of the exams are very helpful. The tests are heavily concept-based, but with the lectures, discussion sections and launchpad assignments, students are usually very prepared. I enjoyed the class with Dr. Pham and highly encourage others to take LS7A with him.

I felt like this was a lot of review from AP Bio, and there is so much LaunchPad work. You do learn a lot of material, and the pace is pretty quick. That said, if you're reading this you probably have to take LS7A, and the curriculum is all the same for every class. Professor Pham is nice and helpful, and he sends out reminders when assignments are due which has saved me a couple times. His explanations of clicker questions are crucial for the exams. I liked this class, but it probably doesn't matter too much which professor you get.

The material covered is very interesting, but the pacing and the flipped classroom model is very tough with no A-levels/AP background in biology. I would highly recommended trying to get Maloy he is very composed and engaging as a lecturer I would sometimes do the Pham clicker questions then attend Maloy's lecture and found it clearer. Pham is a very nice person but not the clearest teacher even if he insists you stop him to ask questions that obviouslt doesn't quite fit the format of a 400 person lecture. Overall the lecture is porbably the least important part of this class, try not to fall behind on launchpad (easier said) and attend discussions and you should be fine regardless of who you get.
