Professor Wint is very reasonable. She assigns weekly readings that are slightly excessive but is doable. You will have a quiz almost every week. The answers to the quiz will come from her lectures. She posts slides but the majority of the information you need for the quiz will be provided during her in-class lectures so make sure to attend and take notes. She offered one extra credit assignment which was a short essay if you wanted to improve your midterm exam score. While she is reasonable, she is not very clear on her expectations for assignments. Attend her office hours to find out what she expects from an assignment or else you might be slightly confused and lose points.
Overall, she is a good professor. Her class will not ruin your quarter but the class is not an easy A either. However, getting an A or a good grade overall is very doable.
I recommend this class if you want to learn more about African history, NE Africa in particular. The professor has engaging lectures. The class has weekly quizzes based on the readings, a short answer midterm, a group project, and a final paper. Your attendance and participation is graded. I found the professor to be fair, caring, and knowledgable. She appreciates students who show in interest in the subject. My only suggestion is I think the amount of assigned reading could be lowered slightly. I recommend taking her classes, the readings are contemporary, and she connects the history to current events.
avoid this class at all costs. lectures have nothing to do with the quizzes, readings, midterms or finals, yet attendance is mandatory. her quizzes are next to impossible unless you've committed the 70+ pages of reading she gave that week to memory. the midterm is a written essay in class, she doesn't tell you what its on but lets you bring a single page of notes (good luck fitting everything on there). repeatedly cancelled class because she lives in the Bay Area and FLIES to campus every morning for lecture.. and then makes you do makeup classes on your own time. I would never take her again and im actually passing her class. so that says enough.
