Ok, Holley is definitely a good lecturer. She's clearly interested in the material she teaches and doesn't drone, keeps showing film clips and musical demos through lecture, etc. She'd be great to just listen to if I never had to take notes during class. Unfortunately, you must, and that's what makes this class a hard take.
Holley doesn't put too much on slides, and she keeps going on tangents and you must note down almost every single point. And yes, she tests some obscure things she just mentions and doesn't have on the slides. The midterm was ridiculous, I had 2 tough CS classes and a math class along with this and somehow this midterm managed to be the hardest one out of all of them. 2 hours to do a rushed short answer question section AND a 4-5 page essay is ridiculous, my hand almost fell off.
The final is much better, and the course material is interesting enough to make the class worth it. Most of the movies were a lot of fun too. I definitely think there's better GE's you could take, but its not the end of the world if you're stuck in this one. Not a lot of reading (and you can get away without doing any of it, because I didn't), and the final essay isn't that bad either. Overall, fun experience, but again, there are better 'ez A' GEs.
PSA: this class is now MUSCLG 7.
From what I remember, your grade in this class is made up of attendance in discussion, a midterm, a final, and a final paper. You have 1 excused absence from discussion before your grade is affected. The final paper is worth a good chunk of your grade, but they grade super easy, so no stress.
Professor Replogle was a pretty okay lecturer. Sometimes she gets too carried away out of excitement and goes off on tangents, which are interesting, but usually not important for the exams. Her slides are super important, so make sure you attend lectures, or have someone take notes for you. As long as you know what she talks about per movie, you'll do fine on the midterm and the final.
If Ross Mitchell is still a TA, please choose his discussion section. He's honestly amazing and made discussion fun to go to, and provided so much help for the exams and final paper.
Overall, easy class and pretty interesting too!
Weekly assignments and movies that are pretty long. tough to take notes in class because she will cover a lot of material but since the TAs grade pretty easily I don't think its too bad but it's somewhat annoying that she touches on one topic and then will go into another very quickly. she gives breaks during lecture which is nice too and the movies are pretty diverse and interesting to watch as well
Incredibly easy online/asynch GE. I didn't watch a single movie, or lecture for that matter. You just have to attend the weekly Zoom discussion section, and my TA was really kind and engaging. I locked in for the final paper after giving the class no thought for the entire quarter and got a nearly perfect score. Take this class!!
I would say the TA you get will make or break this class. My TA was a very generous grader and pretty engaging during discussions. You do have to attend discussions as it is part of your participation grade. The assignments can be tedious as you have to do weekly journals (250 words) based on the week's lecture, 1 final paper (6 pgs), 1 midterm paper (open-book), and 1 final paper (open-book). But as long as you put in decent quality work, you will most likely get an A or even A+. Definitely recommend esp if you like musicals.
Holley is AMAZING! Definitely hang out at her office hours, she's great to bounce ideas off of. This is such a fun and interesting class, I learned so much. The discussions are so engaging and lively, and this was definitely my favorite class this quarter. I had a lot of fun writing the term paper too!
Honestly didn't know what I should expect coming into this class. Since it was asynchronous, every week we would have a movie to watch, a paper to read and lectures pertaining to that movie and other concepts. We would take about them in discussions and have to write about the/analyze the lecture content in a weekly journal entry. We had both a midterm and a final that were open-book and were week long as well as a paper to write on music from a movie of our choice. Personally, I did not watch a single movie since I have no patience whatsoever and didn't take any notes either, just listened to the lectures 2x speed and still managed to do fine. It can definitely feel like a chore if you have no interest in movies and/or music though. (+it is not easy to write a paper about music). I wouldn't takeout again but it wasn't too bad either.
This is the second class I have taken with Dr. Replogle and I have really enjoyed both. This is a super interesting class. One of the criticisms I gave her in the other class was that her selections of music weren't very diverse, racially. I would say that this is not the case for this class. I feel she covered a wide range of musicals given the time she had. For any of her classes, the TA really matters as they will be doing all of the subjective gradings. Discussions are also mandatory. Dr. Replogle is great and I would for sure recommend her!
This class is great, especially if you're into analyzing music. I'm not a film buff but I definitely gained some appreciation for different eras of film. This class starts at silent films and goes all the way to very recent films, so there's something from every era to appreciate. There are a few international films as well-- it was a great sample!
Weekly work took some time: it included around an hour of lecture videos, give or take a few readings, some short supplemental videos, and of course, a full film. There was also a quick journal entry every week and a few random assignments throughout the quarter. It was all asynchronous except for discussions, so there was time to complete all the work. I got into the habit of completing everything over the weekend so I didn't have to worry about it all week. Overall, manageable especially if you're interested!
There was a final essay project with lots of preparation time. They guide you through the process. There was also a "final exam" but it was only a few short answer essay questions for completion on your own time. No quizzes or tests. Would recommend.
