Hilke is the bomb and this class is very easy, wether it's online or in person. Sometimes what you learn in class seems hard (hard formulas and other stuff) but her mid-terms are legit a joke. You will fool around with some formula that looks complicated then start the mid term and BAM 1st question is like what is a planet. The final exam was the exact same questions of mid term 1 +2 verbatim, all of which YOU COULD REVIEW. This class requires no hard math and you only need to understand basic concepts to do well on all her tests. And even if you don't do well on her tests slinky won't let you suffer because she offers a 10% EC opportunity, basically a whole letter grade, by going to the observatory and taking a selfie. Also, there was a select group of students in the F2021 class who gave the prof a hard time in class, wasted time, lowered the class avg etc. Don't pay attention to them, they just spent all class complaining like they were in HS and managed to procrastinate a 10% extra credit opportunity, miss it, and have the audacity to ask for A MAKE UP. This was also coming from the same select group of students who managed to get the chat disabled and said they shouldn't have to study for her tests bc she wasn't being fair. If you get anything below an A in this class (a 90 and above is an A lol) then that's what you deserve. Put in a few hours a week to this class and it's an easy A.
I am surprised this class does not have any reviews. Whew. This class was HORRIBLE. The TA, Akash, was, by far, the worst TA I've ever had. I'm surprised he's even still a TA considering the whole class wrote extremely critical reviews about him for the end of the quarter evaluation. I got a B+ solely because of the extra credit and the final. I did mediocre on the homework because the TA refused to provide help and even the professor sided with him and refused to provide help simply because the whole class disliked Akash, which goes to show how much the professor cares about her student.
Easiest class I've ever taken, including elementary school. 10% extra credit opportunity for going to Griffith's Observatory, worth the same as a midterm, kinda tells you how this class was ran. Weekly homework from TA section, always finished them within the discussion, lectures attendance mandatory through answering a "Question of the Day" that was graded on completion not accuracy, midterms and final remarkably straight forward.
Here's the thing with this class. The professor sucks. She should be teaching upper division classes considering the way she teaches an entry-level class as if the students are supposed to have extensive background knowledge about space. She makes literally no sense when she does lectures, jumps around all over the place, and I overall have not learned a single thing. She is also extremely rude and unhelpful. One time I asked a basic question and she snapped back at me, offered no help, and practically threatened me. She is not a nice woman at all. That being said though, it is easy to get a good grade. There are two midterms (online) and a final (in person). The midterms were both relatively easy and she said the final should be even easier. You do need to attend ALL of the lab discussions so make sure you will be able to do that because the lab assignments are graded for both participation and accuracy. There is a very significant extra credit project as well, which is very nice. So basically, class is easy enough, professor sucks. Take the other EPS SCI 9 professor if you can.
WOW THIS CLASS WAS SOO EASY. idk what that other review was talking about it being hard. I absolutely hate science and I think this is the easiest GE class you can possibly take. Her accent makes it hard to understand things sometimes but the exams are super easy. As long as you go to lecture and pay attention, you'll be fine. As far as the assignments, they're pretty straight forward and it helps if you collaborate with people in your discussion. Breakdown goes: 30% assignments, Final 35%, Midterms 20% (there's two, 25 questions all multiple choice), 15% attendance (you can miss up to two lectures/discussions). There's an extra credit offered that gives you a 10% boost to your ENTIRE grade, so you could literally bomb the final and still get an A as long as you have high scores in the other categories. 10/10 recommend taking this class. I had Akash and he was a really lenient grader. As long as you put in work in assignments he won't mark you down. this class is chill and easy. As a comm/humanities major, this was the easiest class I took all quarter. Great GPA booster.
Class offered great extra credit opportunities and was a very popular GE. There was a lot of material but the tests were relatively easy. Just had to focus on the most common questions. All multiple choice format tests. The material itself was pretty interesting, but not that applicable if you aren't a physical science major. Overall a good and easy science GE that I would definitely recommend.
Y'ALL, listen!! First thing I'm gonna say is: take this class fr, its a GPA boost. Let me tell you my experience.
So, the first 2 weeks of class were pretty tough because it was hard to adjust to Professor Schlichting's teaching style. Everyone so confused. She's definitely not a good lecturer, she jumps around a lot, doesn't explain things very well, and honestly, she would be much better off teaching an upper division course. It feels at times that she assumes that we know more math/science than a lot of us actually do, which isn't good because this is an introductory GE class. In the first two weeks, she also came off as sort of judgmental and not very understanding of our differing backgrounds with math/science. But honestly, I think the class fueled that a lot. She had to disable the comments on Zoom because students were criticizing her teaching style and classmates even argued with each other.
That being said, she's just not a good lecturer. However, you don't need that to pass the class. I'm not sure if the class will be in person, but honestly, just watch the lectures 2x and take notes and you're totally fine. Don't worry about the conceptual stuff, don't worry about the equations, stick to literally memorizing the facts. The labs were SO easy too. They were honestly so interesting tbh, we went to the meteorite gallery in the geology building and girl I did not know wtf a meteorite was so it was cool. The worst 2 labs get dropped and you can therefore miss 2 labs without hurting your grade. If you can, take your discussion with Jade Knighton. She's the sweetest and most helpful TA!!! If not, William is great too!
Participation was calculated by answering a question of the day. You didn't even have to get it right, it was just to know that you were actually watching the lecture. Profe is cool for that.
She offers a whopping 10% extra credit. Like that's literally a whole midterm exam. You can literally miss a whole midterm and still get a good grade in the class. The extra credit was going to the Griffith Observatory, snapping a couple of selfies and pics, and writing about something interesting in the museum. It was honestly kinda fun, and girl it gave me 10% extra credit sooo. 10/10 for that.
As for exams, the midterms were closed note, 25 questions, about 1 hr each. They were easy tbh I didn't even study, I just took notes and memorized some facts. Try to memorize thermonuclear fusion and Kepler's law and you'll be fine. Just take diligent notes, and again, don't worry about memorizing the formulas or trying to derive it. The midterms are harder than the final, but they aren't even hard. Just watch the lectures and you'll be good. I think most people got an 80-100% lol. And if you score badly, don't worry bc the extra credit will help you out.
The final was 50 questions long. Ours was online, open-note. She put a lot of the old midterm questions in the final, so it was so easy. The grade for the final was never released, but I'm confident I only got 1 or 2 wrong tbh. Just look back at old midterms.
You don't need to read the recommended textbook!! I didn't and I got an A+. I know a couple of people did, however, because again she's not the best lecturer. So, if reading helps you learn better, go for it.
All in all, this class was cool. It was like my fun class, my minimum effort class, which was good because my other 2 classes were hard af. I think this was the case for everyone in the class, it was just like a breath of fresh air. Honestly, I feel bad for Profe because everyone was unhappy with her teaching methods in the first couple of weeks (literally so many people dropped it), but she's honestly not that bad. It just seems bad because the information is just so new, and quick. Just watch the lecture again, review your notes, you'll be good!! Professor doesn't want you to not pass, there's no trick questions on the exams. She wants you to do good, and you will!! I recommend. It's one of the easiest GEs I've ever taken!!
alright good luck toodles
This class was very easy online. I think it would be a lot more difficult in person. I had very little previous knowledge of solar systems which could have also played in to my experience. There is a participation grade which you got from answering a question in lecture and going to discussions. Very light work load, easy to manage. I would recommend taking this online, maybe with a different teacher in person though.
It's easy with other professors. I think this prof switched up the curriculum. My friends who took this class with Jewitt are shocked by what this professor is making us do. Apparently for Jewitt you just draw pictures of the moon, but this prof forces you to learn difficult equations that rely on previous knowledge of trigonometry. I thought this would be a fun class to learn cool stuff about space but instead it's a weird astrophysics class that forces you to memorize math you'll never use again if you're not in STEM. Extremely frustrated with this professor and the TAs. I feel conned into taking this class. Fair warning, don't take this class with this prof. If you're looking for the GPA boost, take it with someone else. The only saving grace is her extra credit opportunity, but still, you shouldn't take a class based on the fact your unnecessary low grade was saved by a forgiving extra credit opportunity.
