I took Hist 172B. I def recommend the class overall because as long as you do the readings, attend lectures and study you'll get an A. Theoretically, you should have no problem getting an A in the class because he gives you one essay question every Friday. So, by the midterm you'll have 5 essay questions to study for. He also writes a couple of terms on the board during every lecture. Midterm consist of 5 IDs and 1 essay. Terms are very straight forward and nothing out of the extraordinary. As far as lectures go, you MUST ATTEND. Missing a class feels like missing a week! He takes attendance randomly.

His lectures were straight forward and to take good notes of it is all that needed to ace the tests. its only a matter of complete regurgitation. I didnt do well in the class cuz I fell asleep sometimes and skipped a couple of lectures, but if u follow thru every lecture with great care and read the books then u will ace it for sure

Have taken both his Tokugawa and Japanese History of Religion classes. He is somewhat quiet and well, professorial in his delivery, but the information is very interesting - and so is he if you take the time to drop by office hours. A very nice guy. . Also, it turns out he's a major scholar with like five important books to his credit, so for history and Asian Studies majors, he's extra interesting.

Professor Ooms is a wonderful instructor. It is apparent that he knows his Japanese religious history extremely well and has done extensive research on the topic. He is able to answer almost any question about the material. He is usually available to help and also returns emails quickly. I do not believe he is as easy, however, as people have mentioned. The midterm and final are both worth 50% of the grade and consist of 5 ID questions (which he did not give out ahead of time,) and his choice of an essay question (from a possible 3 questions given out prior to the exam.) Nevertheless, the exams and grading are fair. His promptness in returning grades is also appreciated.
