Grade: B+

Professor Mutlu-Akaturk is very kind and I get the impression she wants everyone to succeed. Her English isn't perfect, but I didn't find it affecting my understanding of the course material.

I will say, I was fully expecting an A in this class, but apparently I bombed the final because I ended up with a B+, even after a 96 average up to that point.

Either way, the course content is pretty straight-forward as long as you memorize the important formulas and concepts. There's two midterms and a final, and the questions the professor puts on them are usually straight out of lecture only with value changes. This definitely isn't a class where you should expect to have your understandings stretched or challenged, so as long as you put in enough work, you should walk away with an A.

The TA-led discussion section is essential, in my opinion. This is where the material from the lectures will be (albeit in a very rushed fashion) compiled and you will be given problems to work through. I would often walk out of lectures with my mind still trying to wrap itself around the concept, but after section, would have no confusion whatsoever. Definitely go to these, as long as your TA isn't a complete joke.

Her lectures were unhelpful. She skips important steps and assumes everyone understands.

Overall great class. She gives weekly homework that is graded on accuracy, so double check before submitting homework. Tests are reasonable and she provides a review for each one. Her slides are well organized and she records her lectures and posts them fairly promptly.

Quarter: Fall 2023
Grade: A-

The materials of this course were pretty difficult for me to grasp at first because it's quite conceptual and uses a lot of unfamiliar terms I wasn't introduced to in previous math classes. Try to TA office hours if you don't understand something - for me, i went to a different TA's OHs before exams because my ta was kinda intimidating and would answer questions really matter of factly. It helps to review the textbook before lectures so you understand what she's explaining. There are 2 midterms, but one can be dropped if you do better on the final. I thought the final was reasonable and we were given enough prep material to do well on it. Prof has a pretty thick accent but you eventually get used to it over the quarter.

I didn't find her lectures helpful so I stopped going after week 2. You can supplement your learning by reading the textbook/YouTube. She takes test questions directly from her practice versions so just make sure to master all the concepts on those and you will be good. Homework is graded on correctness so make sure to go to office hours to get them done. Tests are fair as they are similar to practice exams and partial credit is generous as long as you demonstrate you understand the concept. She allows a cheat sheet on her exams as well. Overall, I would recommend her class.

She is a very nice person, but lectures and notes are not easy to follow. Exams are very similiar to practice versions which is nice. Very stingy with partial credit on midterms.
