This is such a good class- really time consuming though.
Don't bother going to lecture, just go through the book - read each chapter several times, and try to do every problem.
Test are T/F, computations, and a proof. Fist test, the proof was a challenge problem from the book.
Make sure to go to his review sessions because second test the proof was hard and straight from his review session. Make sure you understand it though because he puts a twist on it.
Really hard graders so make sure to be careful and clear. Got a C on first Midterm, a D- on the second, and a D on the final, and ended up with a B in the class.
Final was incredible brutal.
Come to his office hour with question and come with preparation. otherwise, it will be useless. Make sure you follow his lecture and what he is saying since the beginning of class. Math 115a is not something like you can grasp just 1-2 days before the exams (I am a regular type of person).
Tips: go over his lecture notes and then go back to the textbook for reference. It is okay if you cannot solve the homework since the TA will help you.
He is very helpful. This class is incredibly abstract and hard to understand. However, he won't make you feel dumb just like other "highly-ego Teaching assistant". Hida helps you to grow and learn. Good job for Hida!
What to expect: 2 midterms (each 20%), 8 hw's due each week (10%), 1 final (50%). Both midterms were 1 proof with 3-4 parts, 10 true/false questions, and 4 short computational questions. Final was the same structure as midterms, with addition of 5 yes/no questions. Midterms were okay, but final was very difficult (nothing like the midterms). I think we should have had more proofs on the final. I scored around the median on both midterms and below median on the final and received a B in the class. Professor Hida is not the worst, but there probably are better professors out there. Hida is very nice and patient. True, he doesn't embarrass you when you ask seemingly dumb questions. TA for the class (Wong, Wanshun Wilson) was bad. He didn't do a good job of explaining the material so we understood.
Math 115A is indeed one of the hardest undergrad math course. But, Professor Hida has been done everything very well, and all his notes are incredibly useful. His hand writing is very nice and his notes are very easy to follow. He does everything through steps. When we ask kind of "dumb" question, he never makes us embarrassed or lack of confident, instead he will patiently explain again and again. I never wrote a review on bruin walk, and ever since this professor is very impressive to me, I really appreciate all his work. He always holds extra office hour 1-2 hours before the exam starts, and therefore that is a good time to ask. Of course, we have to come with a question (and again, he never makes you feel dumb or foolish). This is one of the best Math professor at UCLA. Two thumbs up for HIDA !!!
