DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. dont take it if youre a geography major, dont take it for a GE, dont take it because it sounds interesting. the prof. is a NICE person. truly he is. but he is possibly the worst lecturer/professor on campus. he doesnt know how to lecture in an organized way and his tests are unrelated to any class material. .... that is all i have to say.

Where do I start? First of all, his lectures are mostly just his own personal thoughts. He shows a lot of pictures, puts up some graphs from the book and mumbles something about them, and talks about how important it is to conserve the environment. That said, you really don't need to go to class, except for the occasional announcement. He required a 5pg single spaced essay that wasn't too bad, but his midterms and finals were hard! It was all on the reading from a terribly boring and dense book. Pretty much nothing he talks about in class was on the exams. So like others were saying, don't be fooled by his gentle demeanor and low key lectures. If you want to take this class, be warned that it is extremely boring - one of the dullest classes I've ever taken in my 4 years at UCLA. And you pretty much have to do ALL of the reading to get an A, and I usually get A's in classes without doing any of the reading.

This was a pretty cool class. Walter is really interested in African ecology and he goes very in-depth. He can meander in his lectures though, and this can become confusing come test time when you find there's a lot of material to know. He likes specific questions on tests so there's a lot of memorization, but overall its not too bad. Mostly its memorizing animals, climate patterns, and location names. There are also identification questions where you match things to pictures. If you're really interested in African environments then take this class.

One of my few B's at UCLA has been in this class. My mistake was underestimating the midterm. Although his teaching style is very laid-back, he means business when he writes the tests. The good news is, if you dont know the answer and guess, chances are you will get some points. Therefore, don't be embarassed about how little you know! Despite my disappointing grade, he is a very endearing man and I enjoyed his class.

I loved Porfessor Walter's geography 163 class!! It was the best class I have ever taken at UCLA. The small size, field trips, and project make it the type of class I had hoped to find at a school where one quickly becomes no more than a nine-digit ID number. Professor Walter made himself readily available for questions and took time to get to know all of us. I got to see places I would have never thought to visit. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
