Chill funny guy. Massive advantage to the people who took AP Calc BC, but that's true for any 31B professor. From what I have heard, his class covers easier problems than other 31B professors and his midterm/final exam averages were much higher as well. Overall his teaching style was solid, going over the concept in the start of lecture and then doing a couple problems. Workload is very light, only like 5 or so problems a week, but if you're struggling with the content or didn't take Calc BC doing a few more would def help. His practice midterms helped tremendously for the midterms, and both were very fair. The final was difficult, but still fair. Overall solid, would take again, probably better than your other options.

I personally loved Haoren. For someone who doesn't like math, I learned a lot and was able to make sense of so much more than I thought. The lectures are good and understandable and the recordings are great too (if you dont wanna go to class). Plus, workload is great. He gives a few questions after every lecture and that accumulates to a weekly homework. And, he accommodates for mid term weeks so you have more time to finish the homework. The discussions are pretty helpful IF you decide to go. You solve a worksheet in each discussion (so twice a week) and they make up 5% of your grade. BUT discussion is also NOT COMPULSORY till the time you just submit the worksheet the same night at 11:59pm. I would 100% recommend taking him for this class and I am 100% looking forward to taking his 31b class next quarter too.

Having taken Calc BC in high school, most of the material was already covered so I felt as if I had a solid base understanding of the content covered in the class. However, I felt as if Haoren at times did make understanding the material more challenging than need be with his style of teaching. His lectures were very organized, with easy-to-read notes that were easy to follow, but his delivery often felt short as he often used textbook terminology to describe the concepts instead of truly making them easier to understand. Despite his shortcomings as a lecturer, I truly do believe that he wants his students to excel in the class as if you need help with any of the homework problems, he is more than happy to go through them during his office hours.

I thought that Haoren's midterms and final were reasonable and were of comparable difficulty to homework problems and the practice midterms. I received a 82% on the first midterm, a 91% on the second one, and a 90% on the final and ended up with an A, so all in all, as long as you fully understand the homework problems and attend office hours as need be, you'll be able to find success in this class.

Despite being a difficult class, Haoren was helpful and clearly wanted us to succeed. He gave us a few extra credit points on the final for filling out his instructor review survey, bumped final grades up a half letter grade (from B+ to A-, etc.), and held several additional office hours during exam weeks. Definitely go to office hours, as he answers questions about homework sets in detail. In lecture, Haoren wasn't always the most clear, and I would often leave more confused than had I just read the textbook (all of his lecture material comes from the textbook). However, it was his first quarter teaching, and he got progressively better throughout the quarter. As far as exams, they were relatively fair. I thought midterm 1 was the easiest, midterm 2 was the hardest, and the final was in between those two in difficulty. Overall, I recommend taking 31B with Haoren, especially compared to horror stories I've heard of other professors.

I enjoyed Xiong a lot more than my past 2 math teachers here. There were two different grading schemes and he used whichever one was higher for your grade. The first one was 15% homework, 20% each midterm, and 45% final. The second one was 15% homework, 35% highest midterm, 55% final. There were 7 homework assignments and he gave us some of the problems for the homework after the lectures so we could start early and practice right after we received the material. The assignments were manageable and usually 8 problems maximum. The first midterm was almost exactly like the practice midterm and pretty easy and the second was similar to the practice but harder with a class average of 66%. The final was pretty difficult and consisted of true/false and free responses. I liked how he did review sessions in class before the exams instead of still giving us new material the lecture before the exam. And the lectures were recorded which was a plus. Overall I thought this class was manageable and would recommend Xiong over another 31B teacher. And if you have the option try for Cecelia as a TA! Literally a human calculator the best TA I've ever had.

A little hard to understand Prof Xiong's accent but you get used to it. The midterm and final were all similar to the practice ones he gave us. Overall I found the class pretty good and liked it. I would recommend taking it with Prof Xiong

This class is hard, obviously, but I loved haoren. He was so funny and clearly cared about us and our learning. There was weekly (ish) homework that he usually went over in office hours which was a little tricky, but if you asked him to go over it he would. The lectures were basically textbook, but he used some new examples and explained a bit better than the textbook. There were 2 midterms, one could be dropped if it helped your grade, and he gave us practice midterms that were extremely similar to the actual midterm. He did review sessions on the weekend before finals and all office hours and lectures were recorded. I got 80% on the first midterm, 86% on the second, and a 72% on the final. Grade was a B- in the end and it was curved to a B. If you are taking this class I would highly recommend haoren especially after hearing stories from my friends with other 31b professors.

Honestly, you are just teaching yourself everything. The professor reads and explains very poorly actually he does not explain. The exams he makes are very complicated and include things that he does not even go over, which is very frustrating. When the class does badly, he writes a message to the students about how badly we did. I took him last quarter too for 31 AL and he said "I went through this and suffered now it is your time to suffer" just to show that he does not care.

Haoren Xiong was a pretty solid professor and definitely made the class enjoyable and interesting. Homeworks were very reasonable (<= 8 questions) and the tests were fair based on topics covered. Highly recommended!
