she explains pretty well in class and her tests aren't that bad. she has cool demonstrations in class almost every day. But her voice gets a bit annoying. the homework problems are a lil hard but if you ask you TA im sure they will help you with the answers.
Professor Gelmini is an extremely passionate, approachable, and darling professor. I have never taken physics before, but I did all of the readings and all of the homework and was able to get an A-. I think the ticket to success in that class is to get a study partner who you can go over homework with and ask questions to. Then, when it's time to study for midterms and finals, just go over the readings, homework assignments, and practice exams and you should be good. Her exams are very fair. The only problem is that the midterms are time restricted, so you may have to rush and not have time to fully understand the questions.
Gelmini makes physics fun for non-science majors, especially with her experiments in class. And the textbook is an easy read. I highly recommend this class and this professor, and this is coming from someone who was completely terrified of physics before taking Physics 10.
Oh, and don't forget to turn in the homework because she absolutely will not accept it late.
I found this class to be very difficult. She teaches CONCEPTUAL physics, therefore, you do not really have to know the math aspect of it. She does provide you with a list of equations in class, but majority of her tests are conceptual questions. If your only exposure to physics was a year in high school I suggest you take an easier professor. Although her tests are all multiple choice they are still difficult. If you have to take her I suggest getting AAP physics tutoring also. She had entertaining experiments in class and she was very animated and knows the material really well, however, it is difficult to understand her sometimes. Also, in each class she packs a lot of information into each lecture, so sometimes it feels overwhelming. As far as office hours, she was late to almost half of her office hours, I found myself waiting outside of her room for half an hour waiting for her to finally show up. I would highly suggest taking another professor.
I think this professor is pretty cool. She's enthusiastic about a subject that really is not that interesting (for a non-science major at least). She also performs a lot of cool demonstrations. However, this class can get boring and she does have an accent and difficulties with the English language that may make it difficult to understand her at first, but you should be able to get used to it. In the beginning of every class, she takes at least 10-15 minutes reviewing the key concepts of the previous class. For the tests, she gives you all the equations you need to calculate any answers, so all you need to know are the key concepts, which I feel are presented through the homework questions she chooses with her lectures. By difficulty, the first midterm was VERY easy, the second was considerably harder, and the final was in the middle. As for the book, if you have taken physics before, you probably will not need the book except to answer the homework questions. She also has a pretty generous curve, with about 30% As and another 40% getting Bs. If you have a respectable knowledge of physics (especially AP Physics) and need a Physical Science GE, I highly suggest you take this class. It's a definite want a nice GPA booster. Even if you do not have previous knowledge of physics, you will do well, so long you keep up and are careful with your HW and tests.
Professor Gelmini is an awesome lady, and a pretty good professor, however Physics 10 is not the easiest course that you think it would be. Gelmini is very understanding, I had a family emergency and was unable to turn in the homework and she excused me from it. Also her tests aren't that long. Don't be fooled by how easy the first midterm is, the second is much harder, but the final was a good mix between the two. She is always available and willling to help a student who doesn't understand and really wants to engage the students in lecture. Also she has a lot of sound effects that she does which is kind of quirky and entertaining. However, sometimes she does derivations to show you how all the formulas are related and that gets really confusing. I would say that she is overall a good professor, but definitely not the easiest for such an introductory course.
Professor Gelmini is a great professor. She is always willing to help and heavily encourages us to seek her help if we're lost. some people complain about her accent..but it really isn't a problem at all...I understood every single word she said in lecture. She gives great demonstrations and simply just wants us to learn the material. Her tests are straightforward....just understand the homeworks and you're all good to go. I definitely recommend taking a class with her.
Gelmini is a great professor. I have never met anyone who is more concerned about her students or enthusiastic about the subject. She uses experiments and examples to make everything clear. She also gives practice midterms that are helpful. The first midterm was VERY easy, the second was pretty hard. The final was more in the middle, but she gives a very helpful curve at the end. Go to the review sessions and read the book.
Professor Gelmini was a decent professor, she had interesting experiments, but the test questions had nothing to do with homework problems. I took this class to get an easy A, and boy that didnt happen. She has no clue how to write a fair test- and she should understand that the homeworks should be related to the tests. I wouldnt take this class unless you want to be confused and misled about physics.
The professor seems to really care about students learning...she always tries to get the class involved with her questions...and like others have said...she's very upbeat and has a bunch of fun demos...
unfortunately...i had a reeeally hard time following lectures...especially for the last section of the course...it seemed like we went really slow during the beginning when we went over easy material, but then at the end we were going so fast through the material that was harder to grasp...
i still did well in the class because the book explained things well...but i know people who aren't "physics inclined" might have a hard time...
