Fall 2022 - Professor Weltman gave a very biased view on ethics, US politics, and global politics. He shared his Zionist, Eurocentric views to give examples of lethal autonomous weapons and the majority of the class was military propaganda. He truly glorified US's engagement in war and never criticized it the same way he criticized the US's climate policies or gender rights. On the several occasions that the professor mentioned the Middle East, he portrayed it as a threat (pictures of suicide bombers and terrorists), and emphasized how the US and Israel have joint forces to combat Gaza. The content of this class in regards to global issue was severely ill-informed and it never questioned military authority or the need for war. - A large portion of course content is about the professor's life and friends. (some exam questions too) *In terms of workload, this class is very easy. Multiple choice exams based on the slides, and 2 10 page essays and a short presentation. - Professor Weltman shared his OWN views on ethics and failed to question them per the ethical guidelines he taught us about. + He was one of the developers of a US military training software and he was proud to share that without addressing how that can be unethical and how that could have lead to the killing of many lives Overall, it was a very ironic experience to see just how biased he was while teaching engineering ethics. The curriculum is disappointing. Question what you are taught in this class please.

Summer 2020 - This class is a complete waste of our time. The professors aren't the problem, they are actually ok or decent and seem nice. Thank goodness I took this class online because taking this class in-person in the summer would be awful. Also for some reason the discussions are mandatory and its like a second class where you "learn" how to write essays (not technical, essays you'd write in an high school English class) and discuss random ethics concepts. Depending on your TA, you either will leave really early or use the entire session wasting your time. Same goes for grading, hope you get an easy grader. The exams are basically test how well you can memorize the material or use CTRL-F if its online. Don't waste your time studying for these exams if its online or try to find someone who has a copy from before. I highly recommend you take this class with friends, it'll make it more tolerable and you guys can work on essay-reviews and other "things" together. This is an easy class and should be an easy A for everyone, but every assignment takes a lot of time to finish. Expect your time to be wasted in this class and just do the bare minimum.

I actually took ENGR 183, but there was no such option in the drop-down menu. Weltman's lectures were pretty much dry for the most part, but his powerpoint slides were pretty fascinating and interesting. He requires three essays out of you, all of which require you to do research online or in a library. The papers can be quite tedious, however, since each paper is about 5 to 6 pages in length. The biggest part of the course was the team research project. You get placed in a group of four, and you do research on a contemporary engineering problem. Your group has to present your research findings in the form of a powerpoint presentation as well as a 40+ page paper that is to look professional. The exams required a lot of writing in a couple of hours, so your hand has to be on its game if you want to finish on time.

Took for ENGR 183EW (system messed up so doesn't let you chose the correct course) and I am very glad it's over! For those of you who are slow writers or is a perfectionist, this class could be a nightmare. Felt like it was massive amount of work. What we did in 8 weeks was... A. Write one 2-page essay (dbl space). B. Write two 6-7 page essays (dbl space). C. Write one 8 page essay (1.5 space) and combine with 4 or 5 other team members to make it one group essay. D. Write five team reports (a page or two contribution per person). E. Midterm F. Take-home Final G. In-class Final (yes, you have to take 2 finals!) H. Make a 40 minute group presentation I. + several other minor things like writing a bibliography etc. Attendance is mandatory and taken for both sections and class (2x2 hours class/week, 3 hours discussion/week). Nothing personal, but lectures were 80% useless. The focus wasn't on ethics at all. I suggest renaming the class as "ENGR183EW History and Impact of Technology to Society." I found Dr. Browne as a better speaker but he only lectures twice or so. DC-10 case and the City Corp case isn't a bad story. The good part about this class is that statistically speaking, 60-70% get straight A's or higher so it's not too hard to beat the curve. I got my A but probably spent much more effort than average.

You can also look up G Weltman for more reviews, as that seems to be the proper page to post reviews on since it has Engineering 183EW as an option for course taken. Professor Weltman is a pretty cool guy. He credits himself as one of the founders of MMORPGs, so that in and of itself is pretty baller. The grade breakdown of the class is like: 5% - participation/attendance (participation in discussion section, attendance in class via a sign up sheet) 24% - 2 papers (6+ pages), 1 on Hardin's Tragedy of the Commons relating to a Californian issue from a list of issues you pick from and another on an ethical case study from a list you choose from (12% each). These are graded by your TAs, so hopefully your TA isn't a hard grader, though they all seem to be. 24% - team research paper, topic is picked from a list given on day 1 of class. Be sure to get rid of slackers/dgafers from your group asap or else it hurts EVERYONE. 5% - team research paper oral presentation, pretty fun, probably graded easily by your TA. 16% - midterm, write fast because you only have 2 hours to finish 10 short answer/essay questions. The grading is super easy though (more or less how much you complete of the test is = to your grade). 26% - final, same as the midterm, just 12 questions instead of 10 and 3 hours to do it instead of 10. Professor Browne does 2 case study lectures before the first midterm, so be sure to go to those if you want to know the answers to some of the midterm questions. He is also a bit more animated than Professor Weltman and reminds me of Penguin from Batman Returns. Overall a pretty easy "A" if you do well on your 2 papers in your discussion (ask your TA for help since you are given a chance to revise your initial turn in of the paper), don't have a group full of slackers for your group project, and can write fast on the midterm/final.

I take him for Engr183EW. He and Professor Brown are teaching the class. The whole class basically raise awareness. I don't have anything about professor Gershon, but professor Brown is kinda ridiculous, because he curses a lot when he talks about the ethical case study. He calls people "god damn stupid". I didn't make this stuff up. Mistakes are made. If he condemns it, then it does not make people did better. If he condemns it, then it is true that no one else would make the same mistake. It is kinda unproductive. The whole class is about talk and write. You are graded on writing considering it is a writing II course. If professor can't even keep his composure, how does he expect students to write about the controversial ethical case study?

This is for ENGR 183 EW. Oh boy, this class was right at 8am so we all had to wake up early to make the class. Be careful of the TA you choose because you don't want Javier F. as your TA because he grades very harshly on your writing (unless you are such a good writer). As for the midterms and final, you have to write fast to get your point across in the blue book. They are often very straightforward and I recommend you study and review the slides as much as you can and mark them for the midterms/finals. As for the group paper, choose your group carefully as they may end up disastrous or productive in the end. The professor is a good lecturer, however, makes people almost fall asleep.
