It's really an honor to be in a class with a professor who speaks from 90 years of experience in the field. Wilson is very personable and friendly. Besides, who wouldn't love a class where you listen to jazz for two hours? It's not hard to get an A - most people did. I pulled a B with little effort. There is also a concert report, a paper on the book, and extra credit. It helps to bring your laptop to take notes and keep you awake. I'm definitely considering taking 120B next quarter.
TAKE HIM!!!! Lectures are great because he basically tells you about his life. If you know anything about jazz, this is the class to take. He's played with all the greats (Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington...). TAKE HIM BEFORE HE LEAVES!!!!
Prof. Wilson is simply great. I loved going to his lectures because he was so enthusiastic about the material and has a first-hand knowledge of the bands he's covering; he's actually written and played with the greats like Duke Ellington! There aren't too many other courses where you can go to lecture and listen to music throughout. As for this class being an easy A, yeah, it pretty much is. I'm interested in jazz myself, so studying for the tests was a pleasure, but even if you don't like jazz (you will after this course, though) it still isn't too bad. You can even attend an extra concert to bolster your grade. Overall, it's a great class that I recommend to everyone.
Prof. Wilson is a great guy and a great prof. His lectures are fun and he's always full of energy even though he's about 80 years old I think. His tests are easy and he even says they're not trying to trick you on his tests. If you have any interest in jazz at all, take this class. If you don't have a liking for jazz, take this and maybe you will afterwards. You can't graduate from UCLA and not take a class with Professor Wilson. He's a living legend.
I luv this guy! and his class! trust me, it's an easy A. yeah sure, there's a lot to memorize but hell, put a few hours into studying for ur midterm or final and u'll pull at least a B!! it's so freakin' easy that i'm taking 120B next quarter so i could boost up my GPA! y'all should do the same if y'all need a GPA booster!!
This class is definitely the easiest class. I got an A+ and I didn't even show up to class. There is no reading involved and all you do is listen to music.
All you have to do is memorize what is on the study guide because that is all that will be on the test. They pretty much give you the answers. How hard is that? There's no thinking involved, but just identifying names since the tests are multiple choice and matching. How much easier can it get?
Gerald is an awesome guy. When learning about something as american as jazz, wouldn't it be great to learn about it from the man who was a big part of it? Prof Wilson is your man. He lived jazz and has so many stories about the greats. He literally knows everything about everything in jazz. He is the best resource!
However, this class is run by his TAs (mainly Charles), but this is not a bad thing. They handle the grading and tests. It's hard to not get a good grade in the class.
this class is easy and fun.
you will learn that jazz is what lies beneath popular music today. take the class. learn to love jazz.
"Salt peanuts!"
I took his class expecting an easy A, but it is not as easy as it seems. There is no curve! Unless you really care about this information and are some what familiar with it, there is just too must to memorize.
First, a part of the midterm & final are listening samples, which all sounded the same to me. Then, there are just 80 people and their instruments to memorize for the final alone. We are talking about note-card after note-card of info. This does not include the actual information you need to know for the multiple choice, like who played what with who, when and in what style. It is not something you can typically memorize in a day.
I'm a north campus person, I push 15 page papers in one night and I do pretty well with multiple-choice, but this is not worth the effort. There are many easier classes to get an A in than this one. I think the only people that have it easy either are musically inclined, or are used to memorizing the things, like the structure of the pancreas or something, all day long.
Prop. Wilson is entertaining, and does want everyone to do well, they even have a review and a study guide, but wanting everyone to get an A does nothing when there is no curve.
definitely one of the most enjoyable classes.. tries his hardest to make sure that everyone gets A's while trying his best to make us love the music that he lives for. one of the only professors and loves, lives, and breathes what he teaches. totally enjoyable.. if you're looking for a breather from a fast paced academic schedule, this would be it!
