Took CEESTD 91 with Prof. Galateanu Winter '14.
She's truly an incredible professor and she has some awesome information to teach you...BUT.
If you're not inclined towards history in general or if readings aren't really your thing, think twice about this class. There are a lot of reviews here saying this is an easy GE—this is really only true if you're a little more north campus than south. If you find the topic interesting you'll have a great time in this class, but if not, be prepared for a very, very rough quarter.
I took Slavic 90 (intro to Slavic Civ.) with Professor Galateanu a few years ago. I could not recommend this professor more if you want to take a class that will change your life. Professor Galateanu is an amazing woman and she combines her own experience in Romania with the course content. She teaches the fundamentals of Slavic civ. and recounts her own experiences with the modern history of Eastern Europe through stories straight from the heart. I took more from this class than any other at UCLA because 1) this professor knows her stuff and is very intelligent, 2) she grew up and KNOWS communist Romania, and 3) she sincerely cares about transferring this knowledge to her students.
I took CEE STD 91 With Professor Galateanu. Like everyone is saying TAKE THIS CLASS! She is an amazing woman with amazing stories. She teaches with the most concern for student learning I have seen at UCLA. She lets you decide at the beginning of class how the class is graded in a way and she is very fair, and its basically you decide your own learning. You can get a good grade and do nothing or learn alot and get a great grade. She has great stories from behind the wall, and you watch great movies. The class size is small and she is a great teacher. I recommend this class to anyone especially those who want to take a good GE that they can get a great grade in.
I took CEE STD 91 with Professor Galateanu and this woman is magnificent. She experienced communism first hand and lives to tell the tale. Her stories are a joy to listen to and she enjoys passing these stories down to her students. She is such a kind woman that you just want to try hard in her class. There is some reading in her class nothing compared to other GE classes, the midterm and final are both easy as long as you study the study guide she provides. This is a teacher you can get to know and love, she makes time for you to go and see her and she will cater the class towards your needs. There is a final, midterm, 2 2-4 page papers and participation. You should all take this class because it was a joy to be in, Professor Galateanu is a great teacher and the class is highly enjoyable and easy if you want it to be.
I’ve taken 2 classes with Professor Galateanu and they were definitely two of my favorite classes at UCLA. I took ROMAN 90, which was a class about Romanian civilization and it was a great class because we covered so many different aspects of Romanian society. The reading was completely doable and interesting. Also, I usually don’t like talking in class and I was initially intimidated by the small size of the class (10 people), but Professor Galateanu made me feel completely comfortable talking and she made it easy to participate in class, which also helped me to get more out of what we did. The other class I took, CEES 91, was also the same style. The movies and readings that we did were really interesting, and discussions in class were thought-provoking and I actually wanted to participate. I also just had a lot of fun in that class, especially the project that we did. Professor Galateanu is one of the nicest and most genuine teachers that I have had at UCLA and she was always more than willing to talk to me after class if I had any questions about something. Not only is Professor Galateanu really nice, but I honestly feel like I have learned the most in her classes and that I will actually remember a lot of what I learned. Part of what made her classes so good is that she tells her actual stories about living in Romania and living during Communism. It makes a much bigger impact to hear true stories about someone you know than to just read about it. Her classes also made me want to learn more about Eastern Europe. I definitely recommend taking any class that you can with Professor Galateanu. Unnecessarily

Her concern was not about making these classes unnecessarily difficult, all of the work was assigned to help you actually learn, not just to be doing busy work.
