Syllabus: Lab 10%, Midterms 18% each, Final 36% Homework 18% (Full credit as long as you attempt each assignment)
Lectures: This professor has a very heavy accent and is rather disorganized when it comes to lectures. He briefly touches upon all the topics in the textbook (and not enough to actually allow you to understand the material from just the lectures alone). You will do most of your learning from the textbook. This is unfortunate because the magnetism portion of the course (unless you have taken physics before) is really challenging if you simply learn it from the textbook - in other words, the material is hard to visualize without a good teacher. You will not find one with Gruner, unfortunately. I learned most of my physics from the TA. Sad to say your book will probably be more useful than lectures for this class.
Exams: On the bright side, this professor curves the average score on the test as a high B/B+, this means that a lot of people will end up getting As and Bs in his class. Unfortunately, the curves are generally quite low, so most of the class can walk out of the course getting an A or B and not having learned any physics at all. The tests themselves are almost taken directly from the homework problems (from the book). In other words, as long as you memorize how to do the homework problems, you will be fine on the exams and probably score above the average (the people in my class really did not get some of the homework I suppose - no surprise with Gruner as a lecturer).
I only got by in the class with help from my Covel tutor. Prof Gruner's accent is hard to understand and he doesn't exactly teach the material in an effective way. He also doesn't do practice problems in class, just goes over concepts. The best thing about this class was that we had a full sheet of paper, front and back, of notes, for midterms and the final. First midterm was really easy, second midterm was really hard, and the final was in between. The grading curve was extremely generous.
Take the class with Prof. Gruner if you don't have better options, and do a bit of studying on your own, and just write everything on your notes! The HW is straight out of the book as well. The TA, Andrew, was really nice, if you need any help.
