I did not enjoy this class at all. It was extremely disorganized, there were literally only like 3 lectures that weren’t canceled throughout the quarter and the ones that weren’t canceled were a complete waste of time. The first quiz in the class was take-home and presented to be extremely easy, but it took almost everyone about 4 hours to complete, so the professor promised an easier second quiz. She last minute announced that the final would be a paper rather than a quiz, which I was not prepared for and completely threw me off during finals week. Every discussion also has different workloads and assignments. Some sections had group projects and presentations while some had no work, which I think is unfair. I honestly feel like I learned nothing in this class, but the workload is relatively easy so if you need a low commitment GE and can handle disorganization, this one might not be so bad.
This class was pretty interesting. I though this class was going to be more of a history class where you had to remember dates, people, etc but its not. You have to read 3 books (but they are free, professor provides them) for the class and have a weekly reflection. The quizzes are really easy. You choose 2-3 key words and define them.
In the discussions it was a project all quarter that has to do with a community that needs help telling their stories. For the project everyone in the discussion works together one group is helping with social media and the other group is apply political pressure to people have power that can help the community. In the weekly reflection you have to connect the reading with what your discussion section is doing to help that community.
Take this with a grain of salt as the TA Strike took place during the quarter I took the class. Honestly, very easy class, Professor Johnson is an amazing scholar and if you're interested in Chicanx/Latinx studies you will learn things that will change your view of American society and history, especially regarding LA history. If you don't care about it and are just looking for an easy GE, I recommend this class as it's very simple and there's no midterm or final exam at all. You will have to work a lot with your discussion section as the grade depends mostly on a final project that gets assigned to you by your TA.
This was one of the easiest classes I’ve taken at UCLA, but I also feel like I learned a lot from it without having to deal with a large workload. The only assignments for the class are two open note quizzes in which you choose a keyword from the class to define and give an example from the readings (which aren’t too heavy either). For discussion I had Emma Cordova, she was great. We had to do discussion posts on the readings every week, and then we talked about the readings in discussion, so it’s pretty straightforward if you at least skim the readings (also participation does matter). The biggest part of the class is the community project that you do with the discussion section you’re in, but again this isn’t that daunting because you’re working with so many other people that your individual workload should be minimal. Overall a great class that I would definitely recommend.
Because of the TA strike, we stopped having class in solidarity and the professor gave everybody As. If this doesn't prove to you how great of a person Gaye is, I don't know what will!
Professor Gaye is so inspiring and an amazing leader at UCLA. She doesn't just care about her students regurgitating information onto a test, she wants them to absorb the info and actually apply it to real life scenarios. I loved her lectures and the discussion section is very hands on with a group project that you visit an organization and make a difference in their social media usage. There are a few key word quizzes in this class but they are no big deal. Between guest speakers, the easy workload, and the real life wisdom learned in this class this is an awesome option.
