Y'all know that this guy sexually assaulted his TAs? Don't take his class or take it to help students to get him out of UCLA.

Professor Piterberg does well enough in lectures, and History 9D is an easy class if you memorize what you need to (and he'll make it extremely obvious what dates, events, and people he wants you to memorize), and attend lecture and discussion. Occasionally having different events happening at the same time, and jumping back and forth in different times and locations can make it all kind of confusing, but my TA and the professor were very good about clearing it all up. On the TA, mine was sometimes somewhat... odd, at times, but I felt that whatever the Professor didn't cover, he did a pretty good job of shoring us up and prepping us for the midterm and final.

As far as lecture goes, the topic itself is sometimes very dry (and the readings you have to do are often as dry as the Sahara), so it's not always terribly interesting. On the other hand, Professor Piterberg occasionally injects some of his very dry cynicism into the lectures, and that makes for a laugh and some interest.

If you're willing make the commitment to consistently attend class and discussion (or at least, get and review lecture notes), this class is a piece of cake.

Awesome professor! Piterberg is very intelligent and has pretty good sense of humor. The class was really interesting to my surprise. Advice: Take notes during lectures, go to discussion, and read. Despite the discussion being so long, my TA, Mathew Kelly, made it interesting. Try to get him. The midterm was fill in the blank so it was not difficult at all. Just memorization. The final wasn't hard at all. By far one of the best class I've ever taken.

I took this lower div with him and I found his class to be pretty easy. I'm taking Hist 105B with him now and it seems like it'll be just as easy. The midterms in both classes are 20-25 fill in the blank statements. If you copy what he writes on the board, you'll know what to study for the midterm and finals. The final is 2 short answer essays. Both exams aren't cumulative. I went to lecture frequently, and when I didn't, I made sure to get notes from someone just so I know what I missed. I don't know how people passed when they never went to lecture...they must've paid attention to the reading! You don't really have to understand the reading, you can just skim (even if you have to write a half page summary- with the book in hand, it's not hard). He's a cool teacher.

its interesting at times, but the discussions suck and are pointless. you do a stupid presentation on a summary of the week's readings which don't help at all. the only thing you have to pay attention to is the review for the midterm and the final exam. not too hard and the TAs are fairly lenient with their grading. didn't go to class the second half of the quarter and still got an A in the class. you should attend the first half. the test questions for the midterm (which will be gone over in the review sessions in discussion) he bolds on the board during his lectures.

Good professor. His lectures are always interesting and informative. He is very opinionated, but he never pushes it on the class. At first he may seem hard to take notes for because he jumps all over the place, but he always makes very clear what you should and shouldn't write down and before each test goes over the material to study very clearly. Definitely take him if you are interested in Middle Eastern History.

Interesting course. Professor is monotone but good. Only a midterm and final, but graded slightly difficult. Talks more of the study of history than the history itself.
