I really liked this class and Professor Rossman. I thought his lectures were very engaging and funny. They're quite dense, but the way Rossman lectures are structured are very easy to follow and understand. He usually starts off by introducing a subject/topics and possible questions attached to the topics. The entire lecture is basically his explanation of these topics and the answers to the questions. The class is about basically about mass media and the media industry. I'm interested in these subjects, so I really liked the things that I learned.
I heard that there used to be weekly quizzes, however, when I took him, he changed it to weekly memos, which I liked. I would rather be writing memos on weekly readings than taking quizzes. They're easy points.
There's one midterm and one final, both I found were pretty fair and not very difficult. As long as you fully understand what Rossman lectures on, you'll be fine. I also had a very good TA who summarized and explained everything Rossman taught on.
Professor Rossman is one of the best professors I have taken here at UCLA. This class in particular was very interesting and allowed for me to engage in his lectures. His TA's are also usually very helpful. As far as the lectures, he does talk a little fast and does not allow laptops to take notes, therefore you have to listen carefully and take notes quickly. However, he does podcast all of his lectures, which allows for you to go back and listen to them in order to take more efficient notes. There are pop quizzes for the readings that are bearable and obvious if you've actually done the readings. There is one midterm and one final and both are essay format of about five to six questions. I highly recommend this class!
Not a hard class and Rossman's lectures are quite interesting/informative. I also liked how the midterm and final were only based on lecture and the pop quizzes were only based on the readings, so it's pretty clear on what you need to focus on when studying (although he did give pop quizzes on the same day as the exams). The only dislike I had for this class were the pop quizzes, which hurt my grade (I was getting As on the exams, but the quizzes dropped my grade to a B+). Some of the pop quiz questions were easy and general, but then there were some very specific questions (like names of authors mentioned), so you really need to pay attention on the readings if you're aiming for an A in the class.
Otherwise, it's a very doable class. No trick questions on the blue book exams and just one page responses for 5 out of 6 questions you choose. As long as you pay attention in lecture, you'll do fine. The pop quizzes do make attendance to lecture mandatory though, and Rossman hates it when people leave lecture right after the quizzes at the beginning of class (he once literally chased down a student who walked out and got him back into lecture lol)... so this isn't the class for you if you're the type to skip lecture. But lectures are generally quite interesting, so I'd definitely recommend the class.
Rossman is an awesome professor.
He really made Mass Comm a interesting topic, and made going to a 1+ hour lecture worth actually attending (his little jokes are HILARIOUS!)
The class consists of a couple of "pop" quizzes, a midterm, and a final.
But honestly the midterm was super easy, just go over your notes from lecture, and the final was even better - NOT CUMULATIVE and the same amount as the midterm but with more time.
Definitely recommend!
Pro's: This is a professor who truly knows what he his teaching and his passion for this subject shows. His lectures are far from hum drum as he does what he can to make you laugh and keep you entertained instead of just a monotone lecture. He also pod casts his lecture but he throw's in pop quiz's to make sure you are attending lecture and completing your readings, so if skipping lecture is your style this is not a good choice for you. The material is pretty interesting and there are no trick questions. You just have to make sure your responses are VERY VERY thorough to get an A. My class was 1 midterm, 1 final and pop quiz's.
Con's: There needs to be a way of knowing which TA you are signing up for before you register because this professor takes no role in your grade. My TA had said that if we attended all discussions and we were within a point or two she would bump us up to the next grade. This very statement had me rolling out of bed while I was sick with Mono and attending discussions. I had a B+ between midterm and pop quiz's but I got a C- on the final (still very sick) and when my final grade turned out to be a 79.8 I questioned why I was bumped up. This professor actually refused to discuss this issue with me and told me to get over it. I don't know about you, but if I am paying for my education I have a right to know why my grade was not as promised. I upheld my end of the bargain by attending every discussion and in the end it matters not! He will back up the TA's every time even when they are in the wrong!
If I knew then what I learned after, I would have dropped this class!!
