Professor Melstrom is hands down the best professor I've had while a student at UCLA. Her lectures are very engaging which makes it easy for students to follow along. The class consists of 2 quizzes, one midterm exam, and a final project. For this particular summer session, class was held via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-11:05AM. I would highly recommend taking thorough notes leading up to the midterm as they will make the preparation process much smoother. After the exam, the main focus of the class is the final project. The grade you get in the class is greatly impacted by your grade on the project which consists of an in-class presentation, group paper, presentation slides, and your evaluation of your team members. I had a great group and felt we all contributed to the project, so as a result, we completed the class with good grades. I highly recommend taking this course with Professor Melstrom as she is genuinely passionate about the content that she is teaching, while making sure that students successfully understand the materials taught in an engaging and fun way!
Took Anth 145S with Prof. Melstrom and loved it! She is a gem! Very down to earth and caring. If you ever have a chance to take a course w her don’t miss the opportunity. She will go above and beyond to provide extra help for you to succeed. It is an easy A if you read the weekly articles, complete the assignments and participate. Talk to her if you have any problems she is very understanding and sweet. Highly recommend!!!
I recently took a class (Anthro 145S) with Professor Melstrom, and she's an absolute sweetheart, overall, a fantastic professor. Her class was pretty easy and straightforward. It consisted of 2 discussion questions/responses at the end of each week, 3 short response papers (a full single-spaced paper), a final project (which could be turned into different forms like a podcast, comic, or paper), the project proposal, and the project peer review. There were a lot of readings assigned each day, but still doable and essential to do because we had to reference a few articles in our final project. As long as you attend class and participate, I would say it's an easy A. Professor Melstrom is in her early teaching years, she hasn't had to best experience teaching, but I think this class was amazing and very engaging.
I had Eva as my TA for Global Health 100, I'm leaving this review here because I know she's about to be a professor and people will want to see what she's like. I've almost never had a TA who cared so much about her students. Eva is super super engaging, genuine, and understanding. She always advocated for us to make sure the professor's assignments were reasonable. She also made such an effort to keep us interested in the class even during Zoom University. Her work is fascinating, and she always had interesting and nuanced thoughts on the broad range of topics we discussed in the course. Even when we had questions about something specific and different from the core themes on the class, she was educated on it and had helpful opinions to share. She goes the extra mile to make sure we learn and I'm sure she will be an excellent professor with generous grading.
