Winter 2020 - Johanna (it says Eva but it's Johanna) Karlsson is the BOMB. A very sweet teacher and a very enjoyable class. I'm currently taking SCAND 3 with her and I've taken this class and SCAND 1 with her prior to this quarter. Swedish is not a very commonly spoken language so taking it is also an uncommon thing. That being said, about half the class comes with prior Swedish knowledge either from home or studying abroad, which helps tremendously. I didn't have either of those and because I had taken on a heavy course load and am taking this as a foreign language requirement (rather than for a major or minor), I ended up just taking it P/NP hence the PASS instead of a grade. Johanna is extremely helpful and her classes are on Zoom because she currently lives in Lund, Sweden. A very cool perk while learning Swedish in my opinion. Participation is a large percentage of points and if you do the workbook and the little homework she assigns. TAKE SWEDISH!!!

Winter 2016 - Johanna, which is the actual name that this professor goes by, is honestly the greatest. Her class has been one of the most enjoyable ones I have taken so far at UCLA! She is funny, sweet, and genuinely interested in her students. We only had about 5-7 people maximum in class, so it was easy to get to know her on a personal level as well as each other. Since it is a blended learning class (Online students from other campuses as well as UCLA students), we were able to Zoom into class if we were unable to make it physically. Participation is 40% so that is VERY IMPORTANT. Each quarter, we had 3 quizzes, 3 writing assignments, and 3 oral presentations. Johanna is more focused on us trying things out than being right, so everyone automatically receives 100% on writing assignments! SCAND 20 is manageable for all levels!! Most of my classmates had some background in Danish, but I had none whatsoever and still pulled off an A! It's really just down to participation and effort. Tusind tak, Johanna! Jeg elsker dansk nu :) The only problem I had was with the Scandinavian department itself not really guaranteeing SCAND 23, which you need to finish the language requirement.....The Registrar DOES NOT reflect reality with Danish, unfortunately.
