I told my friend this was one of my favorite classes of all time. He said I have been taking all the wrong classes. Huhtamo isn't for everyone. Some are put off by his accent and his obessions with the absurd. I have never been more inspired by anyone before. His presentations will blow your mind. He brings in items from his personal collections and plays awesome videos for the class. I wished this class was every day of the week. Getting an A is not difficult - I did it! There are three pop quizzes (read the course reader!). The midterm paper is on the assigned book for the class. There is a scavenger hunt project - which I stress you do in a team (I didn't and regretted it). The final is a team project to design a time capsule. I definitely recommend this class to anyone interested in design.
Erkki is a good guy. You can't understand a word of him, and most of the time you fall asleep in class, but at times he did try to entertain you. 3 hours on fridays at 9am are killer though, but are worth going to because there are pop quizzes. The final is a group project and is pretty easy. I ended up with an A.
his lectures are BORING and practically useless towards the material that's actually tested in the class. he takes attendace and gives out pop quizzes, so you kinda have to go to class. about half of the class fell asleep during lecture though. his midterm are alright. i didn't even read the book and I got a B. The final was interesting. I think most people did well in it. I ended up with a B+ in the class (missed 2 out of 3 quizzes)
easy class, most people slept or skipped lectures even though attendence is taken. If you miss more than 2 lectures unexcused, your grade will drop. There were three quizzes, one midterm, and a final groupwork project. Some of the quizzes were open-note, and they are graded on a P+/P/NP basis. Only your top two quiz scores affect your grade. I found that the assigned book and the reader were basically the same material, so if you need the time, don't bother with the book. The reader was reasonably priced as well. Lectures are power-point slides. Huhtamo himself is a helpful professor; don't be afraid to talk to him or ask questions. He gave out PTE numbers so long as there were enough seats.
Prof. Huhtamo is a brilliant man of design & is really concerned with student learning. However, I am ashamed to say that despite his dedication, I could not stay up in class, especially because it was from 9am-12noon on FRIDAY. This class is SO easy to do well in. I'm MCDB major, & was taking 21 units this qtr. I got a B+ on the midterm & still got A in his class. I recommend him for anyone~
Lecture was once a week at 9 am for three hours, which can be tough but at least he always gave a break in the middle. All grades came from the three pop quizzes, midterm, and final project. The midterm was an in-class project--everyone had a choice between writing an essay and designing something on the spot. The final project was creative and flexible and apparently the TAs were available to read your project before it was due. Huhtamo's accent didn't bother me, and all his powerpoints were available on the website. I found that personally I didn't have to memorize anything but one specific topic and apply that one topic to both my projects. That is what I did and I got an A. But the reader is very interesting and the lectures are relevant to the reading. If you like being creative, I'd definitely recommend this. If you just want to memorize and spit back information, take another class.
