Professor Jager is such a delight in the classroom! He's thoroughly engaged with students and passionate about what he's teaching. I firmly believe that you get the grade you deserve when it comes to his class. As in, doing the work and participating during lecture will almost always result in a good grade. Even if you're worried that you'll be overwhelmed by reading Canterbury Tales (so middle English), he helps you along the way. (Google is also free, and there are MANY sites offering modern translations to aid you on your journey.) My big recommendation is to utilize his office hours; he's a big help when you take papers/tests to him before they're due! Speaking of, he lays out the entire course at the beginning of the quarter, including providing the final exam and final paper.
Professor Jager is a delight. I have zero interest in anything to do with literature in Middle English, but this class reconciled me with the idea that it is actually interesting, humorous, and not hard to understand at all despite how funny it sounds being read aloud. This class is very dependent upon discussions and participation, so make sure you study (or at least google) the assigned reading and listen to the pre-recorded lectures before every class so you can contribute. There is one course paper due towards the end of the quarter and weekly quizzes, which are completed at your own leisure and not in class. You also have to recite a portion of the Canterbury Tales but it's super easy with a little bit of rehearsing.
Overall, this class was very enjoyable with a minimal workload. I would definitely recommend taking this class with Jager if you can!
Everyone needs to stop listening to reviews about Jager. Everyone is scared off after 10A because his tests are so hard, and I believe my final will be very hard. That being said, he is so passionate, kind, understanding, and interesting. His classes were informative, funny, and interesting, and he gives you so many opportunities to do well in the class. He loves participation and meeting to discuss essays. His weekly quizzes are so easy in comparison to other reading quizzes, but you definitely have to read or at least heavily Sparknotes.
