Prof. Woo is really organized. She hands out worksheets in class, which I think are really helpful. Her lectures and worksheets cover materials efficiently. Her tests are not so difficult. I will definitely take other management courses with her again.

Definitely take Prof. Woo for any accounting course. Her background and expertise, and her dedication to student learning make her head and shoulders better than any other accounting professor at UCLA! During my MGMT 120B class with Prof. Woo, I finally felt as if I understood the "language" of accounting. She was very supportive of questions and clarifications during lecture and responsive via email, and was reasonable in terms of grading. She present value using excel instead of how other professors insist doing it via the hand written formula, and had engaging examples relevant to future CPAs! She provided excel amoritzation tables and you were allowed to use your notes (fill in the blank style, similar to Ravetch if you have had him) and a computer not connected to the internet during exams for things like excel or digitized notes. Would recommend Prof. Woo to any person who will be taking the CPA exam or going to a Big 4, 10/10!

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

Woo's 1A class was one of the best experiences I've had at UCLA so far (Caveat: I took this class during the quarter with the pandemic and riots, so it was definitely one of the most mentally-stressful quarters).

TLDR; I can't speak for other quarters, but based on my experience, I'd recommend Woo over for 1A in a heartbeat to anyone. TAKE HER! I'm telling you, you won't regret it.

Right off the bad, here were the initial grade breakdowns:

25% Quiz 1 (25 questions, worth 2 points each)
25% Quiz 2 (25 questions, worth 2 points each)
25% Practice Set (graded out of 50 points*)
25% Quiz 3 (25 questions, worth 2 points each)

*Woo was extremely caring and understanding. When she noticed that a little part of the practice set was out of the scope (and this had a carryforward impact on the rest of the assignment), she reduced the total grading of the practice set from 50 to 40, and the class was graded out of 190 points as opposed to 200. This was a testament to what a great experience the class was.

Lectures: Woo was really organized throughout the quarter, and I feel like she transitioned her lectures online really well. She would upload a lecture packet with all the concepts - a version left with blanks, and another completed one. Her online "lectures" were essentially mini-videos (~10 minutes), where she went page-by-page through the packet, and students could fill out the blank one alongside. Personally, I liked this format since I could watch them in my own time without getting too overwhelmed. Also, she was consistently funny and made even the online pre-recorded videos interactive, which made them really engaging.

Helpfulness: She held office hours often, review sessions for quizzes, and responded to emails and concerns quite quickly. It also helps that her curve was really lenient (something like 85% for an A). She also recommended a bunch of questions from the book AND gave her own solutions to them. Ugh, I hope I get to take more classes with her! Even after the whole craziness this quarter, I really want to give Woo a hug.

Exams: Her quizzes were 1-hour long open-note, with a set time to take them. As an international student, this was a bit of an inconvenience since 7pm LA time was 6am for me. Even still, the quizzes were manageable even for a regular exam; they were made quite a lot easy being open-note. I was a bit silly in that I studied quite a lot for each quiz, but I don't think it was necessary - I ended up being overprepared and could have probably done reasonably well with considerably less preparation (not a brag, it's meant to be a recommendation - you can afford to focus on doing well in your other classes, at least to a certain extent).

There was also 3 points'-worth of extra credit for completing the evaluation, which was ~1.54% of the grade. It's not a lot, but worth keeping in mind.

Prof. Woo is my favorite. Her lectures are concise but cover all of the information. You can tell she actually cares about her students. I think ideally you could do well in this class without the textbook. She really only uses it to assign homework problems (not for a grade).

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

Note: the class was completely online for the entire quarter due to the pandemic, so it is possible I would have had a different experience had it been in person.

All lectures were recorded and uploaded online to CCLE. This was extremely helpful for me as I had a very heavy workload this quarter, which allowed me to focus on other classes and catch up on MGMT every other week or over the weekends (whenever I was free). For each chapter, she provided us with notes with blanks and spaces, which were to be filled as you proceed in the lecture. At the end of the lesson, she uploads the completed notes, so you could always just use her notes instead of writing yours if you needed to. She was a pretty good lecturer, and for the most part, did not have any issue with the quality of the lectures themselves. Homework was assigned in the syllabus for each chapter and was occasionally a bit too tedious. But it did not count toward our grade and was solely for practice and understanding the material.

The overall grade was given by 3 quizzes worth 25% each, and one "Practice Set" worth 25%. The quizzes were straightforward and easy, with maybe one or two tricky questions, and progressively increased in difficulty (it was never even remotely difficult overall). Studying the notes and doing the homework problems is more than enough practice (I only used the textbook for the homework problems). The practice set is a very long assignment in which you apply everything you've learned and do the accounting for a fictional company. The assignment was released during Week 3 and was due by the end of Week 8. I completed it 2 weeks time, without overly rushing (it's possible, but I definitely wouldn't recommend, to grind it out in a few days if you concentrate enough). The assignment was pretty easy for the most part, and she provided ample help on the tricky parts. Though very long, I loved this assignment as I could apply everything we had done which cemented my understanding and I could see how everything learned fitted together. Also, the practice set was originally out of 50 points, but she graded it out of 40 since it was easy to make small mistakes that trickled (Eg: I got a 46/40 in this assignment).

She is also super helpful and kind outside of class. She holds office hours twice a week, and uploads the recordings of those office hours to watch if you could not make it, which I again appreciated as an international student. All in all, I highly recommend her, and would almost certainly take her again for another class.

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A+

Important note: I took this class during the pandemic, so it was completely online. During a normal quarter it would likely have been very different.

This was by far the best class I have taken so far at UCLA. Professor Woo has engaging and straightforward lectures and is a kind and considerate grader. The course is extremely well organized, with assigned (optional) reading, online lectures posted far in advance, and (optional) homework. These three elements combined made learning and retaining information easy and allowed me to go at my own pace. The lectures themselves were essentially fill-in-the-blank worksheets that were very well structured with videos to go along with them, and Professor Woo was very good at adding humor and tricks for remembering concepts in her videos.

Grades depended on 3 quizzes, each worth 25%, and a Practice Set also worth 25%. The class was graded on a generous curve. The quizzes were quite easy with ample preparation. The Practice Set was a project that asked us to record transactions and generate financial statements for a fictional company. Although the project required some knowledge that we didn't learn until later in the quarter and was therefore somewhat difficult to complete until later on, Professor Woo answered questions about it (and other topics) during office hours, which were held twice a week, that cleared up any confusion. Professor Woo also offered 3 points of extra credit for completing the course evaluation, and it was also possible to receive extra credit on the Practice Set; the project was initially worth 50 points, but after noticing a common mistake that reduced people's grades by a large amount based on a concept not directly addressed in lecture, Professor Woo reduced the amount of points the project was worth to 40, making it possible to earn greater than 40/40. This is just one example of how Professor Woo showed great consideration for students.

Overall, I would absolutely take this class with Professor Woo again. The organized nature of the class, combined with Professor Woo's care for students, made it a terrific experience, even with all of the craziness of the pandemic. The class greatly increased my interest in accounting and I can't wait to take another accounting class with Professor Woo!

Very organized professor. Her slides and lectures are recorded and are very clear. 5 quizzes worth 10% each and a practice set worth 50%. The quizzes consisted of 10 often complex problems needing calculations, and you had 20 minutes to complete. That was the only downside. Her lectures were clear and organized and the quizzes and practice set were not super difficult, and did come from the lectures.
