take this class! I took this class as a GE and loved it. Best and easiest class at UCLA. There are no assignments that you need to turn in throughout the quarter beside the midterm, final, and paper. But since it was remote learning this quarter, professor Upton canceled the midterm and gave everyone 100% then changed the final to a 1-3 page reflection essay about what we have learned in the class. Super interesting- the class is all about the Beatles! Would definitely recommend for an easy and fun GE

Overall, this is one of the best classes I have taken at UCLA. Before the class, my understanding of The Beatles wasn't very strong, only from listening to their music over the years. Throughout the class, I not only learned more about the history of the group, but learned a new understanding of both their albums and individual songs. I would highly recommend this class to anyone that is interested in music at large or want to learn more about The Beatles in general. The class has multiple written assignments, but all are very interesting and more based on thorough completeness rather than correct answers. Given everything is more personal, I was able to connect the course material with my life which was an awesome experience.

This is by far the best class I have taken at UCLA. I did come into this class as a huge Beatles fan and I thought that I would not learn anything new but I definitely did. Professor Upton did an amazing job teaching us about not only The Beatles, but also about what was going on during their careers. She gave A LOT of context which was pretty interesting. I was not crazy about learning about different art movements toward the end of the class but it was relevant so it was not too bad. The midterm and final were take home essays which were pretty easy if you are familiar with the songs on certain albums. There is also 2 weekly discussion posts which are only about 250 words so it isn't bad. You should definitely take this class and appreciate Professor Upton because she is literally amazing.

Pretty much the easiest GE you can take at UCLA! I decided to use my First Pass on it and it was well worth it! The course is not hard at all, and they even said that this course isn't meant to stress you out. I did the worst in my discussion group for the midterm with an 86 and I was still able to bring my grade all the way up back to an A+ by scoring over 100 in the discussion section.

Professor Upton was amazing for the lectures I went to in person. Just by reading the slides online it didn't really much sense but she is able to do really well in explaining them! You don't really have to go to lectures, but you should go to since I found it as a nice break in between harder classes!

It's great to actually understand Beatles references Now too in Pop Culture as well as their music!

I'd recommend this class to people who have some interest in learning about the Beatles and are looking for a pretty easy GE. Professor Upton is very knowledgeable about the Beatles and lectures are generally pretty clear. Your grade simply rests on completing weekly writing assignments on CCLE (very simple), attending discussion sections, and a take-home midterm + final.
Honestly, I did not really enjoy this class because the Beatles were not an interesting topic for me, but I can definitely understand why people are into their music.

I knew nothing about the Beatles before this class and I feel like I ended up learning so much. Upton is very knowledgable and her lectures were interesting. Before I took this class I don't think I really cared that much about music or how it's produced, but this class really taught me how to appreciate the intricacies in the music I listen to. The structure of the class makes it really easy to stay on top of the material and get a good grade. There is an online writing assignment every week but it's graded on completion. You just have to write a discussion about the prompt and reply to someone else's post. The midterm and final were both take-home. For both, you had to create a listening guide for an album of your choosing and discuss three songs from it. It had to be between 3-5 pages, which wasn't as hard to hit as I originally thought. The final had two additional essay questions which required 1.5 page responses.
