Really sweet and caring professor. The class was super quick because it was summer session but she did offer a great grading scheme which was predominantly problem sets (2 a week) and added little over 2% as EC opportunity. Additionally, the class was NOT CURVED, so your grade was entirely dependent on your ability to solve physics problems (which were a little ambiguous and confusing at times on the midterms).
Still highly recommend for Physics 1B considering how hard the class usually is through the year.
I highly recommend taking Elizabeth for any class she teaches! I took her for Physics 1B during session A and it was a great decision. The class was structured in a really easy way. 50% of our grade was Problem Sets. And she gave us 12hr to take the midterms. Because of this, she graded on a straight scale, but if you put in the work it was very doable. I also think she is a great teacher. She really cares about her students and goes above and beyond providing resources, examples, and explanations. I really dislike physics but really enjoyed this class. The exams were pretty hard even though they were open note, but I just spent most of the day trying to solve them. Overall, great teacher, awesome grading, and you get to finish one of the harder classes at ucla in just 6 weeks!
I took 1B with Professor Mills in the six weeks during summer session A and it was one of the best decisions I've made. The structure of this course was unique in the sense that the homework counted for 50% of your overall grade and took some of the impact off of the two midterms and final. This class was also not graded on a curve and there wasn't a limit to the number of A's and B's given out to students. Our homework consisted of two problem sets per week and sometimes contained fairly challenging questions, so the majority of our time outside of class was spent working on these. Finishing the homework was very helpful to my understanding of the topic, so I found this to be time well spent. This was the first time Professor Mills was a professor, so sometimes the lectures were a bit difficult to follow, but for the most part everything was contained in our (free) textbook or you could rewatch the lecture recordings at a later time. Our tests were open notes/textbook and we had roughly 12 hours to complete these (which was plenty of time). Overall I would highly recommend this course to anyone taking Physics 1B due to the fantastic structure and professor.
Mills is a pretty decent professor when it comes to explaining concepts. However, that being said, I would definitely say that she doesn't always prepare you for the types of questions she will ask you on the midterm and final. She is also a bit disorganized in her lectures I would say, so sometimes just reading the textbook is the more efficient way to go. In terms of grading scheme, for the summer session it was very generous and really emphasized problem sets, so that if you were putting work in, it would definitely help your grade. She also offered some extra credit for participating on Campuswire and such. Overall, I recommend the class but just be aware of some of these things. :)
I took Physics 1B with Professor Mills during Summer Session A, and I would highly recommend her as a professor.
I didn't do too well in Physics 1A, so I was a bit nervous about this class. Professor Mills's approach to teaching - making sure we understand the concepts intuitively and take an active part in our own education - made physics comprehensible and kind of enjoyable! She was also exceptionally attentive to student needs, and always made an effort to make sure we were supported, inside and outside of the classroom. Questions were always welcome, and answered with expertise and care.
Some things about the logistics of the class:
* It took me a while to get used to the way that she formats the questions on her exams and tests, but the homework was graded mainly on completion and we were given plenty of time and pre-exam resources to prepare for the exams, so it was very doable.
* The workload was pretty heavy also (problem sets due every Tuesday and Friday), but I think this is to be expected for a 6 week Summer Sessions class. Further, the homework didn't feel like busywork, but was an important part of synthesizing the material.
* Discussion sections were mandatory, though she allowed people to submit videos solving the discussion problems if they couldn't attend for full credit, and we were allowed to skip two.
* The official class textbook was Openstax so as to be accessible for everyone.
* As others have said, the class was weighted so that homework was quite important when compared with exams, and since the homework is mostly completion based, just showing up and doing the work is worth a large part of the grade.
So, yes, I left this class with a higher GPA and with a deeper understanding and respect for physics as a whole. Thank you Professor Mills, and to anyone contemplating taking her class, do it! You won't regret it! :)
