Here's the deal with Holl: he's very passionate about the field of accounting, but lacks common sense when teaching the topic. He tries to cover too much, and in effect, covers very little in substance. Because we cover a great deal in the course of 10 weeks, the intuition and concepts behind each accounting process and financial reporting methods are often times overlooked or completely ignored altogether. Also in his attempt to "teach" us as much as possible, he assigns reading and problems in the textbook that he will never cover in lecture nor in his exams. Instead of trimming down the content and really focusing on key topics, Holl's lack of vision in teaching manages to transform what would otherwise be a useful and insightful course in accounting into one that is a complete waste of time. On a side note, he thinks too highly of accountants and often reduces the importance and prestige of people going into law, investment banking, and software engineer. Let's be honest, if accounting was so glorious, why do Big 4 firms recruit at intellectual epicenters like Cal State Long Beach?
Professor Holl is one of the most straight forward professors in the accounting department. His lecture notes outline everything that you need to know, and he is thorough and organized. He also provides examples of previous midterms which help project his style. In addition, he provides a detailed outline of the subject of each question on the test, so you can ignore miscellaneous irrelevant topics. You do have to attend class everyday as a quiz must be turned in at the beginning of class. Overall, after taking professor Ravetch and all the others, I thought that this was the best/easiest class I have taken!!
I saw the rating before I took this class, and obviously they're not that great. But, after taking this class, I have to say that Professor Holl is one of the better accounting professors at UCLA. He has his lecture notes online so it's easy to follow him in class. He also has past exams on the class website, which are close to his actual exams. You do have to put the effort in, because he does assign homework questions. However, your grade is determined by the higher of the traditional scale or the curve. I'll recommend this class to anyone who's gotten this far in the minor.
