This class required a ton of memorization and a lot of bland reading. It took a lot more time than I think a science GE should be. But the labs were easy. I suggest going to the lectures. The first midterm was a joke, but the second midterm was somewhat hard. The final wasn't too bad. I enjoy his sense of humor and he made the lectures easier. He seems like a really nice guy, but I never went to his office hours. The extra credit also helps a lot. I got an A.

This class was very enjoyable. The labs are easy and boost your grade but they are rather tedious. Schauble is a good lecturer and he's fun to watch, plus the lectures are podcasted so that's a bonus. The midterms and final are simple as long as you watch the lectures and read the chapters. Definitely a fun GE.

Not at all a hard teacher; you biggest struggle will probably be to pay attention or go to class because all of his stuff is online, which is also a benefit. A large portion of the material I already knew from various sciences classes over the years, including AP Enviro, but there was some new stuff I learned. First midterm was very easy and I guess I studied too much for it. Second midterm was harder and I didn't stuff very much but still got an A-. Lab final was actually the hardest test given but still not that bad. Final was easy. There is extra credit if you want to do it (I didn't). He's quite flexible with dates so just ask him. Easy GE imo

I thought that this course was a lot of work for a GE. It required lots of memorization for the exams and the labs were tedious and time consuming. There is extra credit which helps your grade a lot. Make sure to do well on the lab quizzes because they can boost up your lab grade. Lectures were really boring, but they are podcasted. However, Professor Schauble seems very concerned about students and is very nice when answering questions.

This class really gets your hopes up when you see his grading scheme and the extra credit was nice too. The class material itself was really interesting. My midterms did not go so well, so I was extremely worried at the end of the quarter for my grade, but the final was pretty good. I would recommend this GE, you don't need to attend class, because of the video podcasts, so it really helps if you need to have another class at the same time.

Honestly, I didn't find Schauble as bad as the reviews made him seem. He did test us on material not covered in lecture, but he provided us extra notes for that. He gives extra credit too, amounting up to two percent. It may not be a lot, but they're easy. You just have to go to seminars or video screenings and write a page on it (I recommend going to The Deep video screening- super cool). They exams were not that bad. You can tell more or less what the emphasis will be based on lectures. He also puts up practice exams. I admit this class wasn't as interesting as I expacted, but I did learn a lot. I thought we'd be studying more marine biology, but most of it was the physical and chemical aspects of the oceans. Not super easy A, but really not that bad. It was the easiest class of the quarter for me.

This course is not an adequate GE course for non science majors. There are 2 midterms and a final as well as a separate lab final which are mostly multiple choice and a few diagram/short answers, however these exams are extremely detailed and specific and altogether very tricky. His lectures cover about 25% of the book, but he expects you to learn the other 75% on your own, and he does test you on it. The labs are not necessarily difficult, just tedious and long and just a pain to get through. I studied for the exams very much and still did not do well. I highly suggest avoiding this course at all costs. Its just not worth the work you have to put in, and then still wind up with a disappointing grade.
PS: If you MUST take this class, try to get Paul Burgess as your TA :)

I came into Oceanography this past fall quarter thinking it would be an easy GE, but unfortunately it was not. The class lectures can get boring and he also tests you on stuff that he does not go over lecture (some of it was very specific as well). The labs were okay and pretty easy, so definitely do well on the quizzes because they can help you boost your grade up. Also try to get Paul as your TA, he's pretty awesome and extremely laid back. If you plan on taking this class I recommend reading the material he assigns and highlight the areas that are presented in his lecture slides; though he does test you on stuff he does not go over, a lot of the material on the exams are stuff from the slides but in greater detail. Make sure you attend lab and take the quizzes!! Take advantage of the extra credit too!

Oh and do not come in thinking you're going to learn about dolphins and what not because you will be disappointed!

Too much work for a g.e. There are 2 midterms, a final, class 3 times a week, a discussion, and tests every week in lab. If you expect to get a decent grade do not slack off.
