This class was incredibly easy (we watched Top Gun and Pretty Woman as assignments and that was the most time I devoted the whole course) while at the same time being quite interesting. Frankel can be harsh and berating at times but he's a smart guy, who always cracks jokes, and he expects more because he cares. The grammar stuff can get tiring but I think everyone walked out with a good grade and he's very responsive to questions and concerns over email and during office hours.
So on the first day of week 0, I thought that this class was a little bit too much. Frankel assigned a paper right away and expected us to turn in a draft five days after; however, you just have to breathe LOL because this class was not really as bad and extra as it seemed to be. Anyways, for our first paper, he made sure that everyone was able to meet up with him in his office to talk about the drafts we wrote. The first paper was not even "a strictly academic paper." He wanted us to be personal about it, which made it seem like we were writing a personal statement. He also gave us ample time to revise our drafts. He required us to write three essays throughout the quarter, but he gave us the option to combine the second and third paper if we wanted to. The second paper was supposed to be 6 pages; the third was supposed to be 8 pages. Therefore, if combined, the paper would have to be 14 pages and would be due finals week. I chose to combine my second and third paper. Initially, it was daunting to write a 14-page paper, but he guided me along the way. I really recommend setting up an appointment with him because he gives you helpful tips and suggestions for improvement. Also, he gave us a list of suggested topics for our 2nd paper, but it could be about anything you want to write about. He just had to approve it. He did not really assign that much reading, and the times he did, we barely talked about it in class. He also assigned us to watch movies and videos, which we discussed thoroughly in class afterwards. He also assigned a quiz during week 10, but because of the Skirball Fire, we weren't able to take it so regarding the quiz, I don't know how difficult his quizzes are. Frankel was also lenient. I know for a fact that some of my classmates were not able to print out an assignment that one time, and he just told them to email him the hw. ALSO ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. He told us an unexcused absence would result to a 5% deduction to our grade.
Professor Frankel is great! He genuinely cares about his students. Every paper you write, if you want, you make an appointment during class where he sits down with you and discusses every page. For the first essay he makes sure everyone has an appointment! He's not intimidating at all.
The discussions in class are so interesting and so are his perspectives.
The workload is light. If you're looking to satisfy your writing I requirement with an Eng Comp 3 class that is interesting and you look forward to this professor is your guy!
I loved Professor Frankel's class so much! I He assigns a 5 page essay (Essay 1) and gives you plenty of opportunities to meet with him to help improve your essay/writing. He also assigns an 8 page paper (Essay 2) about basically anything you want, and gave you until the end of the quarter to turn it in. However, the catch with this is that IF you decide to turn it in at the end of the quarter, you can choose to combine the workload from Essay 3 (6 pages) into Essay 2. In other words, instead of writing two essays ,(Essay 2, 8 pages and Essay 3, 6 pages) you can completely skip writing Essay 3 and make your Essay 2 a 14 page paper. I personally chose to do the 14 page paper, as I found it much easier to focus on one topic, instead of having to write to shorter essays on different topics. Again, he's very sweet and flexible with your schedule and will help you find time to meet with him to improve your writing and look over your essays.
Throughout the quarter, he assigns small assignments (reading an article and writing a small response, sentence structure exercises, watching videos, etc.). This is basically just to help you engage in the conversation in class, and only counts for a small percentage of your grade. One assignment was actually to watch the movie Pretty Woman, which I thought was pretty cool, considering I had never seen the movie. There is also a Vocabulary Quiz at the end of the quarter, but he was so sweet that the day of the vocabulary quiz, he gave us a very cool surprise...
He is very sweet and I would really recommend taking this class! You really just need to focus on the essays, since those counts for most of your grade! Also, our TA was so nice! She would always bring us candy! Overall, this class is the best class I've taken so far.
Professor Frankel seems like a very hard professor at first, hell he assigned a 5 page paper the first day that we had class, but he definitely has his students' best interest at heart. He may not seem like one, but he is a softie and truly cares about the skills that his students will leave his class with. My only advice if you want an A in the class would be to not slack off and not be discouraged if he gives you a bad grade at first. Definitely show that you're putting effort into your work and he will work with you so you can get the grade that you deserve.
Best of luck freshies!!
Frankel is the best Professor i've had at UCLA, he truly cares about his students and wants you to do well in his class. He's not going to give you an Easy A, but he'll tell you exactly what you need to do to get what he wants. Definitely take a class with him if you can.
