As a STEM major who hates everything but STEM this class was literally hell for me. I had to take it simply for WI requirement. However, Dr. Frankel is the best professor I have seen in the writing section of the university.
TAKE HIM! Professor Frankel is one of the best professors I've had the opportunity to take a class with-- he really cares and IT SHOWS! There were a total of four essays throughout the quarter (with the option of the last two being made into one 14 page paper as opposed to two 8 page papers). He is very flexible with the topics and you basically get to create your own :~) Please go to his office hours!! He's such awesome help and will make sure you improve while having fun.
A great teacher who really cares about students as individuals rather than names on an attendance sheet. Frankel really cares about learning and doesn't discriminate against any topic, finding something important in even seemingly the most mundane pop culture topics. The essays might seem like a lot at first, but deadlines are flexible and if you schedule appointments to talk with him about them, he will reward your hard work. He's also a really fun professor to have and I truly feel like I gained a lot from the course. Highly recommend!
Professor Frankel was my first and without a doubt the best professor I have had at UCLA. He truly, truly cares about his students and passionate about the subject he teaches. A lot of freedom when it comes to essay topics and he will give you all the guidance and resources that you need to do well in this class. You simply have to meet him halfway and put in the effort. The T.A. I had was also an incredible, wonderful human being. 20/10 will take his class again.
Frankel was an amazing professor and I was sad to see him go. He is incredibly helpful if you take the time to listen to him and he has many interesting stories. His lectures are more freestyle, he has slides but he uses them as jumping off points for discussions. He's the professor you want if you generally dislike literature classes.
Frankel is a great professor to take English Comp. 3 with. He is one of the most helpful professor I have had so far at UCLA, as he schedules 2 (or more) one-on-one appointments to discuss your essays with you. In my section, coursework consisted of 1 5-page personal paper assigned the first day of class and due the second day of class (a little scary!), a 6-page paper, and a final 8-page paper. Luckily, he gives you the option to combine those last two papers into one 14-page long research paper, which I would suggest doing as you will only have to research one topic. Although I would not consider writing to be my strong suit, I felt that Frankel graded very fairly, and he himself admitted that he was mainly looking for effort. Overall, this was a good class to take during my first quarter at UCLA and I would recommend it to anyone (though particularly those who are interested in symbolism and the movies Pretty Woman, Top Gun, and Heat).
I am selling the course reader from Fall 2018 for $5. Please text me at ********** if interested. There is minor discoloration on the cover but it is otherwise in excellent condition.
Professor Frankel is a great professor and truly cares about his students' learning. He is super lenient and flexible with due dates. I hate writing but his office hour appointments helped me out a lot because his suggestions were super helpful. I think I could've received an A- in the class but I procrastinated so much on my 14 page paper, I finished it an hour before it was due lol. I would definitely take another class with him; however, if I can recall correctly, he mentioned this was his last quarter at ucla. Professors like him is what creates motivation for students.
Frankel is the guy! ENGCOMP 3 should not be a hard class, and Frankel understands that. He truly helps you with your two essays and grades very generously. Definitely sign up for appointments to go over your final paper. He basically tells you what he expects and guides you to an A. Keep :) track :) of :) vocabulary :)
Had Frankel for Fall 2018 for EngComp3, thought he was a genuinely good professor who cared about his student's learning rather than the grade. He has a nice surprise at the end of the quarter along with a final vocab test :). For papers, you can either write 2 papers or 3 papers depending on if you choose to expand on your second paper. Its kind of a risk vs reward thing where you can choose to write a longer paper so its worth more of your grade. Go to office hours to chat about your paper, he really engages with you and helps out. You'll watch Top Gun and Pretty Woman as possible material for your paper. Overall, the class is pretty fun, the workload is pretty minimal other than watching movies and reading a little from the course reader. Super nice guy that's willing to help. Just put in the effort and show you care about your writing.
