This professor is my favorite professor I've ever had at UCLA. He is so fantastic at facilitating discussions. This class goes in depth about how systems of disenfranchisement of individuals have permeated our society -- i.e. racism, sexism, etc. There's a decent amount of reading, but none of it is frivolous. Also! There's a service learning component of this course and I got a nearly year long internship out of the service learning partner that I got while taking this class. (Service learning is where you go and intern at a nonprofit for 3 hours/week -- seems kind of daunting, but really is such a great break and feels amazing to give back).
tl;dr: 10/10 would absolutely recommend!!!!
This class was AMAZING. For anyone who loves community service, and learning about why community service is important, this class is extremely valuable. Prof. Barrera is a really fair, caring guy who knows a lot about what he does. It's a pretty easy class, and the subject matter is really interesting. There are no tests, but there are weekly readings/responses and a final research paper. You get a lot of freedom in this class, and it's really what you make of it.
