Professor Namala was an excellent lecturer. History 8a was a great class to take my first quarter at UCLA. The final and the assigned readings were all manageable and she is very nice as well. Go to her office hours.
The class was not hard at all. Namala herself is nice but a mediocre lecturer. At times she all over the place, but I must say it is interesting. Namala's lectures aren't necessary bc the course reader is exactly the same. Definitely keep up with the readings, it's not a lot (like some have said) but if you miss a week you'll fall behind. Also the TA decides your grade so go to EVERYTHING your TA offers. (If you can, get Cassia - I learned more in office hours and sections than in lecture. She's firm but fair and an awesome TA!) The class is made up of section attendance (10%) midterm (20%) paper (30%) and final (40%) The study guides are really close to the actual tests for the midterm and final. In all if you can keep up with your readings, study the study guides, and follow what your TA wants for the paper you should be fine. My final grade A.
Professor Namala is very passionate about her subject, and was a great lecturer. She is very easy to talk to, and is extremely helpful during her office hours for reviewing for the midterm and final. The class was not that difficult, but there are 4 books that she draws heavily on for the midterm and final that must be read. The class consisted of one midterm, one term paper and the final. The midterm had to be completed in 50 minutes, and consisted of vocabulary definitions, quote identification and two primary source analysis essays. The term paper had to be 5 pages long, and was written about one of four choices she gives you. The final as the same format as the midterm, but included a more comprehensive essay as well. Over all, I highly recommend this class for people looking for an interesting way to fulfill their historical analysis or literary and cultural GE. She has a true passion for Latin America, and her class has piqued my interest in the field as well. Also, it wasn't too difficult! My final grade: A, but keep in mind that the TA determines your grade, not the professor.
Dr. Namala's class is not TOO difficult. There is A LOT of reading to do so don't fall behind! Your grade consists of a midterm, an essay, and your final. So you have to do good. The midterm is EXACTLY like the study guide. There is really no way to mess up unless you don't study. All the powerpoints from lecture are on the website so you'll probably find yourself missing class a lot... Overall, this class is not too hard. Both she and her T.A.'s have many office hours throughout the week. She never stays any later. The only thing that is difficult about the class is that she sometimes tends to jump from one subject to another, but it is do-able.
Honestly, Namala's class was one of the only classes I've ever fallen asleep in. That bad. Her lectures are not interesting at all. If you are worried about the class, just do the reading and you should be fine. I don't think that her finals or midterms are that hard. The main thing that you have to study are the essays, the ID's are pretty obvious. In my opinion, section was more interesting than the lectures and they helped a lot when questions came up. My advice: do the reading and make sure you know what your TA expects.
OH MY GOD. She made our final IMPOSSIBLE for no reason. Not impossible in the sense that you have to study and learn a lot to get an A, but impossible in the way that makes it ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated to study for. Don't take her because she is just like that HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER you couldn't stand.
Last term I took history 8A from Namala. Of the many history courses I have taken, this has been the worst. Unfortunately, the history of colonial latin america had a lot of promise to be a very interesting course. But Namala instead chooses to deviate from the facts and present her own side as if it's fact. However, if you do take a course from her (which I do not recommend) be careful. She is an extreme feminist and will dock you points for assuming that women and men should be treated equally. For instance, in our last essay, she allegedly told all TA's to dock students points who didn't include women in their essay even though the essay didn't ask for it. And for people who included only women, she didn't dock people points for not talking about men. Though, I can only hope that Namala in time has more respect for herself and her classroom. My final grade: A
