I know she is sweet and very concerned with her students. However, her lectures were useless. I could not understand what she was saying. Just do the readings and go to the discussion session. The discussion sessions were more helpful than the lectures. To be honest, it was a boring and useless class. I do not recommend it.
okay lets be honest, Weiner needs to retire ASAP. shes so old that when she lectures she forgets what she was talking about mid-setence and then apologizes for it and does that maybe 5 times every lecture. Shes very knowledgeable indeed but she can no longer compellingly project that knowledge onto students anymore because she is just too old at this point...
now the TA's are probably worse then her...they are the most INCOMPETENT people i have ever met. 110 students turned in their midterms...they come the next week saying more than 50% of the class got a C or lower...and I know how to write papers, this has been the first C ive ever gotten on a paper...EVER. THIS was the first class she assigned discussion for, becuase before professor weiner USED to grade the papers but now she doesnt anymore so she got these two retarded TA's, who think they're smart but they're really not. I dont understand how u give 65 kids in an upper division history course C's or lower on their midterms saying "we dont know how to write"...like fursure.
1 midterm, 1 book review (pointless literally nobody read the book becuase every book on the list is minimum 300-800 pages about history of medicine), even the TA said "grab what info you can from it"...sorry babe thats not learning just to show how incompetent u are.
overall this class was terrible, just flat out terrible, maybe last year it was alot better becuase weiner would just give everyone A's cuz she was old, but now we have these TA's that pretty much ruined my Winter quarter. we got our midterms back around week 7, and literally 5 kids dropped and got W's i noticed...not worth it, not what it used to be. Stay away and its not even about doing the reading and knowing about the material, its more like an upper division critical writing workshop class then an actual history class. For the papers you will need basically 5 pages of text form the primary sources THATS IT, then she wants u to argue..and with the prompts she gives u FORGET IT its arguing a topic that cannot be argued. simply terrible class.
Alright, we haven't even turned in our midterms yet, but I have to say: someone needs to retire.
Yes, she's nice. Yes, she's sweet. Yes, she's concerned about her students... BUT she repeats herself a lot, gets confused/forgets her train of thought very easily, and sends out blank emails because the program she uses times out before she can type a full email. Oh, not to mention, the emails she's trying to send are for her OTHER class.
The TAs basically have to teach the class for her in discussion. It's just really sad.
Midterm (take-home essay), Book review (from list or with instructor approval) and final (take-home essay). <100 pages of readings/week usually. I'm sure if you do the readings/go to discussion, you'll do fine.
Professor Weiner is very concerned about her student and is always asking for their feedback and tries her best to make everyone happy. She is an effective lecturer and her midterm was made of 10 mandatory IDs and 1 take home essay we got to choose from. Her Final was 2 in class essays out of 5 and 2 take home essays out of 5. The essay were only 2 pages long each though so it was chill. There is also a book report which she lets you choose whatever book you wanted on a topic. Go to class because she goes over the main readings. She is very sweet and definitely does her best. If you do your work, go to class, study her notes, and learnt he primary sources you should have no problem getting an A. Take this Class!
Professor Weiner is fabulous! She is the nicest Professor that I have had at UCLA. I sprained my arm b4 the midterm and she let me type it. I had another final on the day of her final and she let me take them at an alternate day! Some found the class boring, but I am PREMED so I liked learning about the history of medicine. If you read the assigned material (not all the background reading), and you come to class...take good notes!...then you should get an A. Her midterm was part ID, part essay and was pretty easy most of the class got A's/B's. The final was a bit tougher, but if you had done the reading all quarter you were fine. She is not a very picky grader, and she very willing to answer questions. Really good about emailing people back. Take her if you want a nice chill history class.
