For course Ethano 91J This class is beyond silly. There is no syllabus. He tells us the grading system the first day of class written on a chalkboard with the numbers here and there. He mentioned that we have to attend two culture events but he never made it clear if we were performing or not until the week before. We were there to watch his performance--out of the two performances we only had to write one paper. I'm thankful for this, however, I believe he never read it and so our grades were purely based on the final. He announces our grade in front of the class. There is absolute no privacy. He publicly ridicules student. We do not know what we are doing each day. He plays favorite, and likes to pick on certain students though others may be doing poorly. It's a very unorganized class.

This is my first time to give comments on BruinWalk and hate a professor so much. I am not a Korean, and I wanted to add his class. His Korean student treated us like we were in kindergarten since he told us to line up one by one in a very impolite way. However, the professor was even worse. I asked if he had any seats left. He thought for awhile and showed me a class list. He told me that the class was full, but the time for the class list was not even the class I wanted. And then, he showed me that another random class was also full. I knew he did not want us to be in his class. When I looked around the classroom, which was full of Korean-speaking people, I realized that it was a place for Korean ONLY. The professor wanted his class to be Korean class. I was so disappointed with this professor, and I wonder why he can teach until now! The previous good comments were given by his Korean students, and if you want to experience unfair treatment, just go to his class!!!!!

By UCLA standards an easy A. I agree with the comments below easy class. 1 paper critiquing one of his concert shows and then a final on Buk So Ri I and II. NOW FOR THE TRUTH. Few minutes ago I finished his final and received an A-. One might wonder what's there to complain about then. First of all I am Korean American and he completely discouraged and bagged on me because I did not speak Korean (though I am fluent in Korean I felt it unfair for the other students who did not speak Korean and so did not speak it). I wouldn't go as far as calling him racist, he just prefers students who speak Korean. He completely humiliates you in front of class. I wonder why he even teaches. I have had horrible professors before but they all taught their students with equality. The way professor Kim treated me I felt inclined to make my first evaluation of a professor throughout my years here at UCLA. For the final athletes who rarely attended classes and could not even read the notes were given A's without hesitation however other students were graded more severely with a touch of discouragement after you messed up. For me he insulted me in Korean thinking that I wasn't Korean. Needless to say the professor as a teacher and person makes me wonder how UCLA could even keep a professor like that. I hope one day a student will stand up to him

DON'T LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE BELOW ME. One, yes, when I took 91 J we wrote one paper, but in the Winter none for the advanced and in Spring Quarter we have the chance to play Buk So Ri II and III at UCI and other places. And I'm also not Korean and most of the people in the class are NOT Korean because they are almost a minority here at UCLA. And the only gripe I have is that most of it is just follow the leader, rather than actually following the sheet music, but that's how Korean traditional works. This is a great class and you learn a lot if you really UNDERSTAND that Buk So Ri Salmonuri is meant to be emotional, but also a connection between the musicians. Plus this class is an easy A. It's been my favorite of the ensembles so far and it'll be the one I'll continually take until he kicks me out!
