Professor Neuen is one of the most amazing professors i have had at UCLA. When you show up to chorale expect to learn a lot of valuable life lessons in addition to music. Every week he has a new anecdote for us. The man also knows exactly what he's doing. Yes there are times he might lose his temper with the choir, btu that is because we are not doing our best. At the end of every class he always reminds us how intelligent and wonderful we are. His experience in the music world is clearly seen thru the way he deals with people. From the annoying union representatives to the soloists, the accompanists, and the choir. He praises the orchestra many times even though he knows they are getting paid for playing. He treats them as human beings not just some paid robots. Even if Dr. Neuen yells at someone, he follows it up with an appology and advice on how to improve. He is an amazing person. A+++ for Dr. Neuen!

Professor Neuen is extremely talented as a conductor and has proven to be so through his choir and orchestra performances. However, his action to humiliate, disrespect, and demean his students is his biggest downfall. This says a lot about someone's character and their values. I understand that he values performance but if you cannot value your students as individuals then you have failed to the morals of your profession. He forgets that as a UCLA professor there are certain UCLA values that he needs to abide by. Respecting students is not an option, it is a right to each and every one of you as a human being.

Fall 2013 - Knowledge: know what it is. Know how to teach it. Know how to inspire it. A core “motto” of C118A so to speak, Professor Neuen made it his mission to instill this in his students and also exhibit it phenomenally within each class session. Professor Neuen is by far one of the most exceptional instructors I’ve had the privilege of learning from. He is deeply passionate about success and does everything in his power to make sure his students retain his lessons well and engage in a constant improvement process. I approached C118A knowing close to nothing about the art of choral conducting. It even took me half of the course time to learn how to simply hold a baton correctly. Instead of displaying any sort of frustration or irritation, Professor Neuen remained patient and always more than willing to help fix my errors. After each conducting assignment, where I would usually find nothing but self-criticism for my performance, Professor Neuen would always find a particular component of my conducting that he appreciated and would congratulate my efforts. His constant encouragement meant the world to me. His staunch belief in perfection is deeply admirable and his lectures and demonstrations are incredibly beautiful and inspiring as a result of this. Professor Neuen’s breadth of knowledge on the world of choral music and choral conducting is astounding and I am so grateful to have been able to study under him.
