Quarter: Winter 2020
Grade: B+
April 15, 2020

Had to take 20B to fulfill requirements, even though I had already learned the content way before. About 70-80ish students were enrolled in the class, but if you ever went to lecture you could expect to see less than 20 students, unless there was a quiz/midterm.

The content is pretty simple, but Baugh can't explain it well at all. However, that's okay. He moves through his own syllabus very slowly (a week's work in a month). It's easy to keep up with the course through the textbook and a few practice questions. What's really annoying is Baugh's quizzes and exams. He is very unclear on what will be tested and keeps changing the date. Then, when you take the quiz, you'll spend half the time trying to understand what the damn question is asking you because the English used in his questions is just SO UNCLEAR. He writes them out as if he's talking, and it's hard enough to understand what he says anyway.

Once you get the exams back, you'll find that the grading is frickin inconsistent and your classmate may have written the EXACT same thing as you, but you get 0/50 and he gets 50/50. His questions aren't hard, but they're stupid questions.

I really thought I'd get an A in this class, because I know the topic really well. If not for his grading errors, I probably would've got it. It also felt like his final grades were quite random. I don't recommend anybody take this guy's class, and don't know how tf he is teaching at UCLA.

FYI, he was "under review" this quarter for about two weeks and then he said he would improve, but that was complete BS. Don't enroll in his class.

I asked Prof Baugh how to best study for his finals and he gave me a convoluted, rambling response that as students, we should test out different methods of studying until we find what works best.
His lecture slides are far beyond the scope of 20A and his tests are just a complete gamble. Pray that your TAs write the test and teach in discussion, because lecture and the textbook are worthless.
Fun fact, Baugh is active on Instagram! I'd recommend taking a look at his following list ;-)

Professor Baugh tries really hard when it comes to lectures and office hours, but his exams are ridiculous in that they don't really test your knowledge of the material - they're almost a guessing game. His test questions were confusing and sometimes grammatically incorrect. I was in his Chemistry 20B lecture for Spring 2013, and he still hasn't given us our final grades yet (we took the final four weeks ago). I went to all his lectures, but he's hard to understand at times. In order to do well in his class you need to do the reading, understand the graphs, go to your TA for help, and laugh at his jokes. He's a nice guy and he tries really hard, but he's just not meant to teach college level chemistry.

He still has not given us back our final grades yet. That is not okay. Its three weeks after the class, and the deadline has already passed.

Baugh was not as bad of a professor as people made him out to be, his test questions are confusing and difficult to answer sometimes, but all in all his class is do-able.

However, the one thing that is extremely annoying about Baugh is how long it takes him to get back your final grades to you. Right now it is beginning the third week since our final exam, and we still have not received our grades yet. Our grades were due last week as well, because passes have already happened I haven't been able to enroll in classes that I need to enroll in because this class was a prerequisite and I still do not have a grade for it. If he is making us take a final on a certain day, I feel like it is only fair to have our grades ready by the due date especially when the due date it 2 weeks after the actual final.

Ok so I was forced to take Baugh otherwise I would have to wait till next winter to take 20B. He definitely changed his way of teaching (probably cause I heard he got in trouble for failing too many students). If you want to do well, go to lectures because he tells you what he will put on the exams. Baugh has his own idea of what is important to this course and goes through his own agenda. We didn't even finish the material in time for the final. I think a lot of students skip out on his lectures, which is probably why they failed so much before. Also, you definitely need to read the textbook and get practice exams from the test bank if you want to do well.

Lastly, I'm really upset that it has been 1 week past the deadline to submit grades and he STILL has not given our grades. Honestly, if students are forced to take a final on a specific date and time then a professor should at least have the same courtesy to grade our exams and report our grades in a timely manner.

Baugh has definitely changed since all of these reviews were written. I dropped 20B because I was failing winter quarter with Mason, and retook 20B with Baugh in the spring. He has at least 7 office hours a week and is willing to accommodate his students. The test bank is definitely helpful and old tests are definitely the best way to study for exams. He doesn't have any required homework or OWL--which is awesome. Lectures are very helpful and you NEED to go to his review sessions. He sends out the slides after each class and review. I haven't taken the final yet, but I am currently doing well in the class and aiming for an A.

I had him for 20A and now, again for 20B. The keys to his exams were just looking up old questions and understanding all the pictures, charts, etc. that were on his slides. It's not easy, but it really isn't that bad. I got an A in 20A, and I should be getting an A (maybe even A+) as well in 20B.

By the way, you know what's worse than taking Baugh for Chem?? Take CS 31 with Rohr. Enough said.
