Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A
Feb. 21, 2018

Baugh honestly isnt a very good professor. He goes on tangents frequently and a lot of people just didnt go to lecture because of how unhelpful they were. My TA however was amazing and is the only reason I ended up not having to teach myself the entire course. He has a weird grading scheme but it rewards people who do well on the final. Overall, dont take him but if its your only option then hope for a good TA.

Baugh was a passionate lecturer, extremely excited about Chemistry, but his teaching was unnecessarily complicated and seemingly irrelevant to the tests. Even the TAs told the students to disregard what he said in class since they made the tests. Quantum mechanics isn't all that interesting, so that didn't really help.
On the plus side, he did allow for "cheat sheets" on tests, and he conserved points from the midterms. Overall, I would not recommend taking Chemistry with Baugh, but if you must, it's not terrible.

Even if I got an A+, I still regret taking his class since I literally learned nothing in his lecture. It's all thanks to my high school chemistry materials. I strongly suggest students other than chem major don't even take 20A. A lot of my friends struggled and then failed. By the way, I don't understand why math dept. requires chem as premajor. It's funny. I'd rather take physics 1C.

While Baugh is a very nice and personable guy, he makes his class a very annoying experience because he lectures not on the content of the textbook necessarily, but rather similarly connected concepts which he finds most interesting. This makes his lectures rather engaging and cool, but makes the tests (which are conceptual) quite difficult. Also the homework is irrelevant.

Okay, this is not an easy class. The material is tough to understand in the beginning but if you go to his OH as well as TA's OH and study correctly, it is possible to pass this class. He is a very hilarious and down to earth man and would highly recommend this course to people who are willing to put in the effort or are just super smart and understand quantum easily. His method of grading is super awesome and makes it so that you never technically lose points in the class. If your TA is Gail then you are set, but if not just go to her discussions or OH and she will gladly help!

So basically if you go to lecture you'll probably struggle to understand what he's talking about since his lectures are super confusing and the slides are needlessly complex. Instead, ditch lecture and read the textbook. If you study your ass off and know everything from the sections being tested, you'll find the tests to be pleasantly easy. Also use the test bank, and hope you have a good TA. It'll be a lot of outside studying but if you put in the work you'll do well.

tldr; Baugh is a horrible and unclear professor but his grading system was my saving grace. It's possible to do well in the class as long as you are willing to put in lots of time and effort into studying on your own time.

To give it to you straight, Baugh is a horrible professor. Literally horrible. His lectures are incredibly unclear. You can tell he really loves chemistry and has a vast amount of knowledge about the subject, but the way in which he tries to teach and communicate to the class just does not work at all. During lecture, I could never tell if he was talking about something important that would be on the test or if he was on a tangent/rant that was super irrelevant to the class. Office hours were just as confusing. The workload of the class itself wouldn't have been nearly as heavy if he were a clear professor because the way he teaches, you are forced to self learn the material and study it yourself, which takes a considerable amount of time. The only way I managed to scrape by with a C was with my TA and Baugh's grading system. My TA was my only source of hope in this class. He taught very concisely and clearly and catered his lectures to the students in discussion. When I studied for Baugh's tests, I never even touched my lecture notes, I only studied discussion notes and the textbook and used google. Also, the only thing Baugh does to truly help students is his grading system. I literally failed every single midterm and the final, but I still got a C because of the way his grading system goes. You should also know though that I really struggle with chemistry in general and my time management was not the best this quarter. It was Baugh's horrible teaching methods plus my sketchy study/time skills that resulted in a terrible quarter. My friend got an A in this class and she had the same TA as me, she just put in more work. It's definitely possible to do well in this class, especially if you have a great TA and are willing to put in lots of time and effort into earning a good grade, but honestly at the end of the day, Baugh will still be a horrible professor.

I took this class in freshman fall quarter and I wouldn't recommend anyone to do the same. Professor Baugh is not a clear or engaging or fun lecturer. His lectures were often so complicated that it felt way beyond our scope of understanding ( and he would later admit we don't need to know this. The only way i passed this class was because my TA was very helpful. though Baugh did hold review sessions before midterms and finals they were not helpful at all. His lectures are very irrelevant to the subject matter that is tested upon. He often lags behind in the syllabus, and rushes the portion at the end of the class.

Do not take this class as a GE with Proffessor Baugh. Iappreciate hard classes but his class was incomprehensible. The only saving grace if you Have to take this class as a req is that the class is curved and the TA's are very helpful

Baugh was incoherent, his lectures were unrelated to the hw problems and quizzes/tests. His slides were filled with advanced proofs using differential equations for equations he never fully explained, and were completely out of order/ didn't follow any sort of logical path. When people would ask questions, he would respond, and each individual word could be understood, but when taken as a whole they didn't have any meaning, and the question remained unanswered. He also fell behind his own syllabus extremely quickly, and he moved the midterm which was scheduled for Monday of week 8 was moved to Friday of week 9, so we had 3 lectures to cover 2 weeks worth of material that was going to be on the final. The HW isn't graded or turned in, which isn't inherently a good thing or a bad thing, but the problems in the book can be challenging and/or unclear (chegg is a good resource to see the process of solving them if you're lost). The quizzes were based off the hw pretty closely, so if you manage to understand it you should be fine. Also, his grading scheme is weird, where any points you miss on the midterms get added to the final, so if you miss 50 points on the midterm, 50 points are added to the final exam. This puts pretty much your entire grade on the final exam alone. I would avoid Baugh at all costs.
