I honestly cannot fathom how anyone could possibly suggest this professor. I legitimately had the worst learning experience I've had since being here. His lectures go way too fast, and he literally skips over entire slides but expects you to know the material. While macro econ is pretty basic and easy to understand, he automatically assumes that it comes easy to everyone. Also, you better not ask him a question in class because ANYTHING that steers him off course, even a little bit, throws him completely out of wack and he just sits there and cannot think of an intelligible answer. Brown may be an expert on the topic but he is absolutely TERRIBLE at communicating his knowledge to the class.
That being said, the tests are fairly easy, and the final is a joke. almost 80% of it came straight from the previous two tests. One annoying thing though is that he puts random, unrelated questions about what he mentioned in lecture. Instead of testing the material he tests whether or not you wrote down every word he says in lecture.
In all, I would highly recommend NOT taking Brown if at all possible.
Maybe the others who reviewed had different experiences but I, like the three below me, had a decent experience with Brown. Makes you think about economics in lecture and goes beyond the book with real life examples and plenty of them to amuse. He was way more than fair in exams, repeating multiple choice questions on tests. The free response questions were quite easy if you took a bit of time to review them in the week prior. Must say I enjoyed the class, his information and the fact that my hard work and dedication gave me an advantage over the lazier. Aplia homework problems were annoying to do every week but would still take a class from Brown. We did get our grades posted today and I did well
Brown is nowhere near as bad as the reviews farther below have said. He keeps class interesting and knows his stuff. I also had an excellent TA who definitely helped alot, but Brown was good as well. I got an A in the class and all I did was do the practice assignments and finals online, as well as aplia. Brown is pretty good and if you get a chance, definitely take him.
First, just let me state that my grade in his class is not a factor in this review since I haven't received my grade, yet. I agree with the post below mine. Prof. Brown wasn't as bad as a lot people say. His examples and anecdotes are meant to be helpful, and sometimes, they are amusing. Yes, you have to put in some time outside the classroom to teach yourself, but that's college! If you do everything you're supposed to do as a student, you'll do fine in his class. My advice: 1) work on Aplia assignments judiciously 2) don't sleep in class (duh), or attend class when you'resleepy because you won't remember what he says 3) do practice assignments and past exams posted online. If you really love economics, like I do, you'll put in enough effort. If not, as Brown says, you should major in something else.
Brown was not as bad as people here have said. His lectures haven't had too many mistakes this quarter, and he's not horribly boring. He does have a passion for economics and does try to make sure that his students understand the material. His tests are not bad at all, but I had an excellent TA (Olivella) who helped me alot. As a professor, he's not that bad, and if you end up getting up, don't sweat it too much. He's not too bad.
I took this class in Winter 2002. I think Brown cared too much about making sure the grades were normally distributed than caring about the learning in the classroom. Unorganized lecturer. He's got obligations elsewhere, so his lack of preparation doesn't surprise me. I don't recommend him because frankly, you won't get much out of him. He's hardly there after class (obligations elsewhere, Pomona I presume). Take someone else, someone who works at UCLA and sticks around.
Brown seems like a nice enough guy with a legitimate passion for economics, but he is unfortunately horribly boring. His lectures put more than half of his 8 a.m. class to sleep, those who came, anyway. If you keep up with the reading and go to section, it shouldn't be too difficult, but try to get a more interesting professor if possible.
Lectures are pretty much useless... spends way too much lecturing on the basics of economics and caused him not to finish the later chapters which are also on the final... Fairly easy grading for his tests. EASY A, but don't expect to learn too much. Read the text and learn by yourself because his lectures just confuse you even more.
Lectures are boring, probably cause I took the class at 8am. No organization at all. Goes through easy chapters slow and hard chapters fast. Tests were way too long and too hard for a Econ 2 class. Covered WAY too much material so the Final was impossible. I really disliked this professor. He even had the audacity to change his office hours in the middle of the quarter from 9 - 11am to 6 - 8am!!! Do not take this professor for econ if you don't have to.
If you are lazy student and dont want to attend lecture. This class is for you. Probably you can get an A- or better if you do really read and understand all the chapters assigned. Though he may ask something that not mention in the lectures, there are only very few points in this area. And this is a class that I missed half of the lecture but still got an A. Diligence matters.
Brown is nice and does know the material well. I will say that he is a good professor if not including his lectures. His lectures are really poor. First, poor organization. 4 easy microecon chapters for first 4 weeks, 7 more difficult chapters in only 2 to 2.5 week. Then the remaining are some other 6 chapters. Since the first midterm, he used a turbo engine and suddenly left local roads to freeway. However, you dont have time to understand his lecture if you dont read the textbook before. He speaks so fast but not explaining well. I do not really recommend him if you want to attend lectures.
