I thought that based on the past bruin walk reviews I wouldn't have to study to get an A in the class, but that wasn't true. You do have to study a little and pay attention in class, but this was by far easier than some of the other physci electives offered in the spring. Sometimes the lectures can get a bit boring learning about worms and flies and how they age, but it was still kinda interesting, but def more focused on molecular biology than physiology. Only grades are the 40% midterm and 60% final, but if you go to his office hours before the exams he basically will say what content he will ask.
Class takeaway: eat your pomegranates!
He's a good guy, very young and interested in his work. Sometimes he makes some funny jokes. Overall a very nice person, and he has a very articulate manner of teaching. The slides all have the important information you need to know on them, so the format of the class is very organized. He is always available for questions after class and is genuinely concerned that students learn the material. Just read his slides and make sure you understand major conclusions on the summary slides. Exams are free response/short answer type questions. Very fair professor, not a very difficult class.
Overall: Good guy, good class. Highly recommended as an upper div phy sci elective.
I took Phy Sci 124 during Spring 2011. I really enjoyed this class, and Dr. Walker is a great professor. He is super nice, very young, and genuinely concerned that you understand the material. There are no quizzes or homework or anything. Just one midterm exam and one final exam, both of which are VERY, VERY fair! The lecture slides are pretty easy to follow along, and as the other reviewew mentioned, just be sure you understand the major conclusions on the summary slides (every lecture has summary slides for you!). Lecture is scheduled for twice a week, 2 hours each class, but Dr. Walker almost always lets class out an hour earlier. Dr. Walker is always willing to stay after class to answer questions. He is VERY helpful and kind. I HIGHLY recommend this class. I ended up getting an A+. Easy, enjoyable, interest material, and Dr. Walker is a great professor.
I really enjoyed this class! The format has not changed and is still one midterm and one final! He goes through many slides but always ends class early. He is very clear and always helps you understand the take-home messages with his summary/interpretation slides. He is also very patient and very helpful if you ask him questions outside of class!
His slides dont have much text on it so take good notes in class! Although it might seem like a lot of material and a lot of figures/findings to know, he prompts you during the exams and really emphasizes the big picture understanding/summary points. If you go to lecture and understand how everything works in a pathway etc. you should be fine :)
This is by far the greatest class I have ever taken at UCLA. Walker is an amazing professor and explains every concepts very well. He is very patient and can be humorous at times. Class involves one midterm and one final, noncumulative. To study for the exams, you only need to go through his lecture slides and take notes during the lecture. The slides are very clear and the figures and tables are the most helpful. He has summary slides after every few slides to summarize the concepts. These slides are the most important so make sure to understand what these concepts are. For important concepts, he emphasizes them not only in the lecture slides but also during the lectures. The exams are extremely fair. This class is a MUST-TAKE.
I would HIGHLY recommend this class to anyone who has the chance. Dr. Walker is a great lecturer and the material is fascinating (especially if you love pathways). The class is 2 hours long BUT we very infrequently stayed the entire time, most of the time we would be let out an hour early. And even though we finish class early, Dr. Walker stays behind to answer any questions you may have. There is only one midterm and a final, which sounds terrifying, but both of which are very fair. Also, there is no textbook for the class as well, instead we learn about Aging research that has been published not to long ago. In short everyone should really take this class
David Walker is far and beyond the best professor you will have at UCLA and he also just so happens to teach the best class at UCLA.
TL;DR: take this class
Pretty chill class. Professor would lecture over zoom for usually less than 2 hours and we had 6 homework assignments worth 10% each that came straight from lecture and didn't require outside thought/knowledge/information. Attendance was 10% but I'm not even sure if he took it. There was no final but there was a project worth 30% that you could do by yourself or in small groups and we basically just did a 2 page research proposal. If you went to OH, he really guided you and it was hard to mess it up.
