The best professor to take physics with! Just do the online homework and go to the review sessions and you will do fine. The exams are very straightforward and similar to the homework questions. You also get a page of notes for each exam as well.
He does plenty of sample problems in class and pulls nothing tricky on exams. There wasn't really a curve to the class, since exam averages were high overall.
One of the best professors that I've had here at UCLA, and DEFINITELY the best Physics professor I've ever had. Really cares about his students, made the 8 am class three days a week easy to get up for. He's really nice, friendly, approachable, and helpful. Even if you don't ever talk to him, he explains things so well. This is the first physics class I enjoyed and I actually learned a lot during it too.
Info:
-Curve doesn't tend to be the best, but simple, straight-forward tests just like the homeworks
-Review Sessions before every test, don't you dare miss these
-No cheat sheet allowed, but equations sheet provided, lets you see it before the actual test
-Extremely quick grader, usually tests given back the next class day.
Seriously though, if he's teaching it, take his class, you will not regret it
He made Physics 6C the easiest course of the series. I got a B- in 6A and a B+ in 6B, but I easily got an A with Schriver. His lectures were easy to follow and he would do practice problems in class so we understand how to use the equations, which I believe is the best way of learning. Weekly quizzes were given, which were very EASY points (one question straight from the homework he assigns). Study, or memorize, the homework for the week and you'll get the 10 points. Exams were easy too, but it did require a little more thinking than the homework. However, I probably studied more for the midterms and final than I should have, since his tests were so straightforward (no tricks, just concepts he taught in class or problems he handed out in homework). Take Physics 6C with Dr. Schriver, you won't regret it!
Dr. Schriver was an excellent professor! He was extremely nice, helpful, had a good sense of humor, and his lectures were really organized and clear. Sometimes when he explains a difficult concept, he would explain it several times to make sure we understand it, and when he works out sample problems from the textbook in class, he usually would never skip steps so it'll be clear what he's doing. He has several office hours during the week, and if you can't go, you can always e-mail him for help--he responds fairly quickly to e-mails. There are weekly homework assignments, but they're hand-written, not Web Assign, so you have to turn it in in class. If he assigns you even numbered problems and you're not sure about your answer, you can always ask him or the TA to make sure you did the problem correctly. There are usually quizzes every week (except week one and midterm weeks), but they're really easy--it's just a homework problem with a few numbers changed. The midterms and final are all calculations with numbers instead of variables, and you can use whatever calculator you want. They were fairly easy--as long as you go to his review sessions (which are really helpful, by the way) and study the homework problems, the problems he does in class, as well as the extra problems he goes over in the review session, you'll be fine. Take Dr. Schriver--he's awesome!
I say UCLA gets rid of the rest of their PHYSICS professors and have him teach them all =)He is without any exaggeration the best professor EVER. SO nice and sweet, and ohh sooo understanding. You can tell he really cares about his students. His lectures are so clear, I dont understand how ppl say you won't learn much in his class but get a good grade. I highly disagree with that. I learned more with him than with any of my other professors. He lectures so clearly and just dumbs it down, i feel like i am in high school being spoon fed, that is something rare to be found at ucla. I learned soooo much, i can say i masted physics 6c. he's just great!
so he holds review sessions before every midterm! I am telling you, don't miss them. I am the "review sessions are a waste of my time" kinda gal, although thats the case with many professors, but not him. He summarizes the chapters sooo well, you pretty much will ace the exam if u study what he reviews in class. hes very organized
Like i said I cant say enough good things about this man! He should be the department chair and not that rude man. professor schriver is nice, understanding, sweet and very intelligent and man does he know how to teach, he knows how to explain even some difficult concepts.
If he's teaching and you don;t take his class, that would be the biggest mistake of your life.
Easily one of best science professors I've ever had at UCLA. He's concise, incredibly organized and its not at all difficult to follow what he's saying in class. Everyone I know that went to class did really well in the class. He's speaks clearly, has no accent and is very open to answering questions. If you have the opportunity, take Dr. Schriver's physics class. The only complaint I have is that at times he had a tendency to dumb things down, particularly on the exams. The averages on the exams were 89%, 81% and i'm not so sure about the final.
