Professor Schriver is one of the best professors I've taken ever on south campus. Personally, I didn't have a strong physics background so physics classes were especially difficult for me. I had professors before him in the physics department that just derived equations during lectures. This helps to some extent, but professor schriver goes into the concepts which is what really matters. I got a grasp of the material in physics for basically the first time and I managed to pull off an A-. =)

Winter 2025 - schriver is an angel, his tests are very simple and fair and he gives a formula sheet for each which has any formula you could possibly need for the test (without giving any formulas you don't need). there were weekly homework assignments (8 total) which had 10 questions each. they're pretty straightforward and you get 10 attempts per question, with no deduction for each attempt. even when schriver's tests were a bit harder than normal, they made up for it by offering insanely generous partial credit. the final exam was not cumulative so it just covered between midterm 2 and week 10's content. overall, i would say it is difficult to get anything But an a in this class, he really wants you to succeed and the exams are exactly like his class review sessions (which he does during the regularly scheduled lecture). he also cancelled a lot of lectures which was nice. attendance in discussion is optional, the ta basically just goes over a couple problems and then the rest of the time is used for homework questions. you can also attend any other discussion time even if you are not enrolled in it. no attendance is taken and it was in a big room so it was very easy to attend a different section if needed. labs were sometimes kind of confusing in terms of the steps you had to follow and the computer programs but the LAs and TA should help you, and my TA at least was a very lenient grader so i never lost any points on anything even if it wasn't 100% accurate. but that's TA dependent i guess.

Winter 2020 - Dr Schriver is amazing. He is such a sweet heart and you can tell he cares about his students. His voice can be boring sometimes but he really does teach the material in a way that non physicists can comprehend. What I recommend doing is taking notes on his commentary in class, rather than trying to copy down the slides. Then after class when he posts his power points back track and connect his talking points with each slide. Many of his slides don't have much detail so this is what I found to be the best method for gathering all of the information. He handled the COVID-19 craze and transition to online with grace despite the fact that he was very clearly immensely stressed about the last minute cancellation of our final. He really listened to our concerns and made a decision based on actually helping us. Try to hit up the test bank for his physics 6 series exams when you are prepping for the midterms. Discussions are a waste of time, don't bother going. He is very helpful in office hours and it's a great way to get one on one time, as many students don't go until the week of the midterm. I wish I could finish the physics series with him. Don't pass on the opportunity to take him!
