Best professor I've had at UCLA so far. Makes a genuine effort to make sure everyone has understood the concepts, and is quite funny! His tests are hard, but it is definitely possible to get a good grade if you do all the work he assigns and study all his worksheets thoroughly. I would definitely take a class with him again. Avoid the class if you're looking for a class only for an easy A.
I remember checking out this very page befor I signed up to take Professor Ravetch in the Spring. I was petrified b/c of the many negative reviews, and my fears were compounded when only 30 other students signed up for a class designed to hold 180! But it fit my schedule, and I went with Ravetch, and all I can say is thank G-d so many UCLA students are afraid of 8 AM classes. Not only was the class enjoyable, but the fact that there were so few students made it a really fun experience.
Ravetch starts the class out by asking his students what they've heard about him. He likes it when they answer that he's got a bad rap. And he then proceeds to make it very clear to you that success IS possible in his class. You just have to keep up with the class and homework, keep things clear in your mind, and ask him your questions.
You must do the homework. Do the homework as soon as he covers the chapter in class, and then do it again the night before the test, b/c he always takes at least one problem from the exercises and switches the numbers. Go to his office hours. And don't forget to think! Accounting is actually quite logical, and Professor Ravetch makes the concepts behind the principles very clear, so if you THINK on the tests (what a novel approach!) you will definitely get lots of partial credit. One of the best things about Ravetch is that he grades with the "carry-through" error, so if you make a mistake and use that number for other associated problems, it won't adversely affect you.
Even if you aren't lucky enough to have a small class like I did, you will still enjoy Ravetch immensely. He's really funny at times, and other times he tries so hard that even if his joke is bad, you laugh at him. Oh, and as for the post that says Ravetch is overrated--the only aspect that's overrated is the difficulty of the class. It's so doable, it's scary that so many pass him up.
Good luck, and I hope you enjoy Ravetch as much as I did!
Ravetch is the finest professor I have had here at UCLA. His teaching style truly gets the material across effectively and his ability to understand and anticipate student concerns is unbelievable. He is one of the few teachers where you absolutely have to do the work and keep up to do well, which, I'm sorry to say, is unusual even here at UCLA.
He makes you learn the material, not cram or fight for a grade change. If you are willing to keep up with the material, this is one of the most straighforward classes you will take. HE IS NOT OUT TO GET YOU. But you do have to understand the material (is that so much to ask? really?)
I learned an incredible amount in his class and am now seriously considering a career in accounting. I highly recommend taking courses with David Ravetch and I plan to take as many courses as I can from him.
Ravetch is an extremely intelligent man. His class was challenging, but totally do-able. Do all the homework problems, go to every lecture, and memorize class notes. I pulled off an A- doing this. A cool thing was that even though class was scheduled to last 1 hr. 50 min, he usually let us out early. And we had a relatively small class, so he made a decent effort to learn our names. I also noticed that Ravetch really cares about his appearance...from his gel-slicked hair to his clothes. He was quite handsome at times!
Professor Ravetch is a great teacher he makes a boring subject tolerable with his entertaining lectures. His courses are very demanding but it is not impossible to get a good grade in his class. Make sure you do all of the homework and review the course reader and you should do fine.
