If you do all the work, you will pass. Also, Professor Ravetch is the best. Lectures were long but he made them feel much shorter. He's a great teacher, and very funny and charismatic. He makes hard concepts simple.
The tests (three midterms) were awful. Every time I thought I was prepared I was wrong. Every time I thought I did okay I was also wrong. It's weird because you feel like you know everything while you're doing the test because Professor Ravetch taught it so cleanly and nicely and then you get your test back and you realize that you were wrong and also kind of dumb.
Most of you will take this class anyway because you have to for your major, and Ravetch is honestly worth the lower GPA in my opinion.
Prof. Ravetch was one of the best professors I had in my freshman year, and I enjoyed Mgmt 1A with him despite the uninteresting subject matter. He ensures that classes are lively and fun, and personally answers questions in class to the best of his ability. His tests are hard and the class is curved down, so it is necessary to do ALEKS and the Practice Set well in order to get a good grade - they will act as a buffer for bad test grades. If you want to do well on the tests (there are three midterms, non-cumulative, no final), make sure to do all the ALEKS problems, go over class notes again and do the homework problems he assigns. Homework problems are not assessed, but should be done if you want to learn or get any help during the section. There are good review sessions before midterms, but it is helpful enough to go over the decks if the TA emails them if you can't make it (assuming you understand matter decently). Reading the textbook is optional though he recommends it, I got by on just his class notes - which are clearer and more simplified. Go to office hours if you have questions, he is very helpful with the practice set too.
Overall MGMT 1A is not as bad as the reviews say, but just make sure to give it enough time and effort.
Ravetch is a great teacher who is very funny and engaging. The class was difficult but fair and not unmanageable. The one problem set was due on the day of the first midterm and took 6-12 hours. Tests were very difficult and required knowing a lot of nuances. However, with a lot of studying it is very possible to get a decent grade.
While challenging, this class is not nearly as hard as the reviews make it seem. After reading Bruin Walk, I was terrified to take this class with Ravetch and was just hoping to get a B, but I ended up with an A and a new favorite teacher. Mgmt 1A with Ravetch is one of my favorite classes I've taken at UCLA so far. Not because I love accounting (I don't), but because Professor Ravetch is the most engaging, helpful, and funny professor I have had at UCLA. Please take this class if you need to take 1A, I am so thankful that I did. If you want to do well-- do ALL the homework problems before the test, take notes on the textbook, and redo all the problems from the class notes a night or two before the exam. The exams are extremely fair and Ravetch gives you ample time to finish the exam and check over it. If you are willing to pay attention in class and put in some effort and do the problems, this class is completely manageable. Don't go in expecting an easy A, but don't let the reviews scare you, Professor Ravetch wants you to succeed.
Took this class for Business Economics pre-major, absolutely hated it. Dropped the class 2 weeks before finals because I knew there was no way I would pass. The professor was great, but the material/major just didn't interest me. I am pretty sure if I was actually interested in the material I would've done better. However, I am actually really glad I took this class because, after I overheard peoples conversations in the class about wanting to work for some huge corporation and climb a corporate ladder, I realized the major or class wasn't for me. This led me to drop to just Econ major, but then I realized I also hated Econ so I ultimately ended up in the new Public Affairs major and I absolutely love it. No hate on the professor, class, or major! I am just thankful this class opened my eyes and helped me realized my mistake.
Read the negative reviews and was not excited to take this class, but I needed it for my pre-major. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked his teaching style and actually learned a lot. However, the exams can be a killer if you did not study all the material in great detail.
Overall, this was a great class, but unfortunately it was insanely difficult. With this class being so difficult, however, you learn a lot and if you are going to take management with Ravetch, I recommend pass of no pass unless you're an accounting god. Great professor, impossible class.
Professor Ravetch is my favorite professor of all time. His lectures are engaging and you leave feeling comfortable with the material until you get to the homework which is often much more difficult; however, it is very useful for studying. He is approachable, responds to emails, and actually cares about his students (unlike Gardner). Everyone says that Gardner is easier, but after having both I greatly prefer Ravetch. Yes, his tests are hard and some questions are tricky, but trust me this is much better than the ridiculous amount of questions that must be solved on one of Gardner's tests. Take Ravetch if you want an A and are willing to do the work. Take Gardner if you want an easy B.
