Professor Rigby is funny, but his lectures can be boring. The weekly readings assigned provide a good background, but they're extremely dense and lengthy. He covers the important material in lecture either way, so as long as you attend class and are thorough with the slides, you'll be fine. (The final mostly tests you on concepts he's covered in class) The two assignments are usually manageable, but I suggest attending TA's office hours and asking them to review your ideas because they have certain expectations and it's easier to meet them (and get an A) that way.

The final also has an essay section - this is the only part that might motivate you to do some of the weekly readings. If you don't have the time to, though, you can look through old essay questions and answer them (by looking at and remembering relevant info from the readings), because he's mostly likely to test on the same concepts if not the very same question.

Professor Rigby has been great. Yes his lectures can be a little tiresome, and it can be hard to focus sometimes, but that is only because he repeats his concepts so there is really no excuse for you to -not- understand them. He makes jokes, he's smart, and just wonderful.

In terms of grading, the class is pretty easy, two big assignments, that you don't really need lecture for, (however, pay attention to citation, since the TAs are sticklers for those) and a final. Section won't be helpful as the TAs themselves admit that they don't really know a lot about geography. However, for the final, the professor basically gave the class half of the questions as 'practice' in advance, and he was very open for his office hours where he made room for students and explained everything even more thoroughly, if that was even possible.

Attend the lectures, know vocabulary, and you will be good to go. I freaked out about the class, a lot of it was because of how section went, but at the end of the day, you'll be rewarded for just paying attention and doing a few hours of cramming.

I don't know why some people are raving about Rigby because I did NOT enjoy the class [Geo 4] AT ALL.

His lectures are disorganized and he is always going off on tangents. At the end of the lecture you think, "what was I suppose to get out of this?" Rigby loves stats and data so be prepared to have over 50% of his powerpoints consist of just charts and graphs.

The concepts aren't too difficult to grasp, but the way he presents them is horrible and ineffective. The TA's aren't that great either, but I'd take Ali if you can. He's the best!

He posts the PPTS online. No midterm, just a 10th week final. Biweekly 1 paragraph summaries are assigned as well, but no worry, they're a breeze to write. There are also 2 5-6 page papers.

The $80-something course reader doesn't help at all....so no point in buying it. The articles that he assigns are quite lengthy and goes way more into detail than needed. Just study off of the PPTs, lectures, and some additional research if you have any further questions. But yeah, don't get a course reader.

Overall, I'd give this class a 6/10. Could have been much better if Rigby structured it better.

Rigby is a pretty good professor. The final is purely based on his lectures, so it's not too bad. He is very knowledgeable of the subject and seems very interested in teaching it. I personally thought a majority of the information is interesting, but that might be because I am a biz econ major. I highly recommend this class, the course reader is necessary (for the section weekly assignments). The only issue I had with the class is that there was no midterm, so the final had all the information from the entire quarter. However, the final was very fair (consisted of short answers and an essay) and you can definitely get an A in this class!

Horrible TA's. The class is absolutely brutal to attend and you should just totally avoid this professor at all costs. He's really boring, and to make things worst - attending lecture is a must because EVERYTHING he puts on the final is from lecture. don't even try wasting your time doing reading unless for weekly assignments because they're otherwise pretty much pointless. Bad choice of articles all together to take it - I tried so hard in the class and still only got a B. Thanks - I learned nothing!!
