I have heard many good things about Professor Kaplan who turned out to be very kind and passionate about analytical philosophy. However, I am unsure if it is due to the format, but I struggled heavily in his course. He would give interesting examples, however he made several references to PHIL 31, logic, which I was unfamiliar with since I took symbolic logic at my community college. The class was extremely difficult, I got a B- on the midterm, so I changed the class to P/NP since I became worried I would not be receiving an A in the class. This class just felt like a huge review of logic, and I was not prepared since I did not take logic at UCLA. I do not recommend this class at least in the online format, perhaps in person it is more reasonable. Kaplan was very interesting and very kind, I enjoyed his anecdotal stories and bizarre examples. If you can avoid this class be do so. It's two weeks after the quarter has ended and we are barely being notified of our grades and how much our midterm and final were worth. He assigned us our midterm at the end of week 8 after telling us that he would most likely just combine our final and midterm. You will honestly walk into class not knowing what to expect or what you should be learning and leave equally confused. He is a really kind professor, but he is not clear. Final consisted of a 10 page paper and the majority of the questions were unclear even after office hours and review sessions. The midterm was 2 pages but only because it wouldn't be possible to assign a 10 page paper a week before the final or he probably would have. Not an easy A!!
This instructor is the worst! There is absolutely not structure to his class. There is no syllabus. The midterm was given a couple weeks before the END OF THE QUARTER. He goes off on tangents and is a boring lecturer. Do yourself a favor and avoid him! It's been past two weeks since we ended Spring Quarter and our final hasn't been graded, nevermind our final grade! Why should we pay for the incompetence of a beloved and generous (donor) instructor?!
