I loved this class! I found it to be one of the most straight forward linguistics classes at UCLA I've taken so far. Professor Goldstein is great and really helps you understand the content. The content is not the easiest at times, but all of the resources are clear and very helpful. If you study you will do well. All there is is homework, a midterm and a second midterm (final) that isn't cumulative. Homeworks could be difficult here and there but the lowest grade is dropped. I found it easy to do well on the tests although the content was difficult enough. Change of language overtime is a very interesting subject, and I would highly recommend this course.
It was an interesting class with a light workload. If you did well in the phonology course, you will most likely enjoy this class. The final and midterm were relatively easy and 4 out of 5 Homeworks were pretty straightforward. The concepts studied are very interesting and give you a good insight into historical linguistics as a field. The professor explained every topic in a great detail and was happy to answer the students' questions.
