This is such a great class! I joined this class a bit late because I was on the waitlsit, and the professor was very accommodating in giving materials to help me get a jumpstart while I was waiting for my unit petition to get approved. The study guides replace the typically exams that you would expect in a class, which I really liked because it was a change of pace form my usual STEM class setup. A HUGE variety of interesting topics were covered, including LGBTQ-everything, human behavior, evolution, etc - definitely take it, especially if you're an LGBTQ studies minor!
Professor Frederick has the highest ratio of TA: Students out of all the courses I've taken at UCLA. He's very approachable in regards to asking about any topic. There are no exams; instead its two study guides, a final project, and attendance. The Study guides are pretty hefty, but you always have available TAs to receive feedback. I would recommend the class if you desire to learn about human sexuality, but if you're looking for an easy A, it's not for you.
Dave is a great professor who cares about his students. He often brings in amazing guest lecturers who talk about a variety of sexual related things. These guest lecturers are here to answer any questions you are curious about. This class was very interesting. It consisted of mini essays and study guides. The content itself was manageable but the study guides were very time consuming. You are guaranteed to pass as long as you take your time on the study guides. Good Luck !
I really enjoyed the class, it was a great way to end my last summer at UCLA. The course content was extremely interesting and very informative. The in class discussions to view our opinion in relation to popular opinion found in studies was very interesting. Viewing various points and differences in society or gender or any other topic was one of my favorite moments because the class was engaged and we all laughed. The exams were very straight forward along with his study guides. The exams are hand written and it took a while to complete but to write it down and think was better than multiple choice. The ending of the exams were he had us give examples stumped me a bit just because I couldn't think on the spot that fast. But he did give really good alternatives for in class options for exams, posters, ideas, and was very much open to talking about our own ideas or questions about the course. In the end with our own poster to engage in our own type of research was really fun and even though I hate group projects, I thought it was really fun to do overall.
If you're looking for an easy A class, don't take this course. However, getting a grade somewhere in the A range is not necessarily difficult or easy, it just requires a ton of work and effort. Thus, it's pretty doable as long as you're willing to put in the time for it. When I say putting in time, I mean putting in 10-15 hours of work for a study guide assignment. Coming from someone who has academically struggled during their first year at UCLA, I highly recommend this course. I didn't think I'd finish this class with the grade that I did, but I mostly attribute it to the fact that if you follow the directions that Dr. Frederick gives you for assignments, you will at least get an A-. If he tells you that it takes about 10-12 hours to complete a study guide worth an A+, LISTEN! If you pay attention to the advice he gives, tips from past students (posted on his class page on CCLE), and assignment examples from past students, you should be good to go.
This class was genuinely one of the most informative and interesting psychology classes I've taken, and that says a lot. Professor Frederick is so funny and engaging and really knows his stuff. The workload was slightly overwhelming and a lot more than I expected for a summer class, however, the material was so interesting that I always looked forward to completing the work. This class is heavily focused around guest speakers, who attended almost every class. They were usually very interesting and often had books that we were assigned to read a part of. Professor also did lecture slides to expand on relevant topics. Attendance was mandatory, he allowed for two absences, but after that, there was a 5% deduction for each missed class. The only graded materials in the class were 2 study guides, which were really lengthy and in-depth, and an optional final project. If you don't complete the final project, your grade is only based on the 2 study guides and is capped at a B+. The final project was fun for me, I just conducted a study and made a poster presentation about it. He also gives lots of Extra Credit opportunities. Overall, I highly recommend this class and Professor Frederick. As long as you are not a heavy procrastinator, you can finish this class with an A+.
