I really enjoyed taking this class. If you have the option to take Psych 120A with Professor Clewett you totally should! Although the tests were somewhat hard, if you put in the work you should be able to get a B or A on them. Lectures are podcasted (as of this quarter) and you have a weekly quiz most weeks as well as a small assignment and discussion section with a completion attendance question. 2 Exams. Textbook not really necessary. Would take another one of his classes in the future!
Like the other reviews said, Professor Clewett made 120A really enjoyable. He's definitely a newer and younger professor, but compared to most other profs in Column A classes, he is truly passionate about the material he teaches and making sure everyone is receiving a fair grade. To that extent he offered many extra credit opportunities and even on quizzes with disputed questions he took those questions out from grading. Besides that, refer to the other reviews for how Spring 2021 went, but overall, it was a fantastic experience. You do need to buy ZAPS (online labs) for $30 if the class is all online and you do need to download Respondus for exams, but overall though it was asynchronous most of the class really enjoyed their experience.
Best man that's all I have to say. The class material itself isn't super difficult to understand, but there's a LOT of information needed to be learned. Regarding David, he was one of the sweetest professors I've ever had being super generous about a lot of things + he taught fairly well. THe class consisted of 30% midterm and 30% final (proctored via. Respondus + Lockdown Browser), 15% zaps, 10% discussion, and 15% quizzes. Everything in this class was super fair, and I would advise take this class with Prof. Clewette for the best time possible.
I loved Professor Clewett and his teaching style. He’s pretty young, but he knows his stuff and teaches it well. On top of that, he was extremely empathetic towards his students. For the weekly quizzes, if there was a reasonable dispute for one or two of the questions, he almost automatically threw them out because he said he doesn’t intend to trick us. He is also very transparent about what is fair game for the exams, which are almost directly based on his lecture slides and not too difficult (all multiple choice within a reasonable time limit). For discussion, attendance is required but it doesn’t require much participation— the TA (mine was Mary and she was cool) simply reinforces the material from class. Content is actually pretty interesting, and I believe Prof. Clewett is engaging as well as understanding!! (He uses memes in his slides… believe me, he’s a chill dude). He also gives easy extra credit. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR CLEWETT.
This has got to be one of the best choices I've made for taking a class over the summer. There were no assignments due throughout the quarter, just a few experiment simulations due at the end of the term, which were fairly easy to complete. Most of the grade is dependent on your midterm and final, which is on lockdown browser but is open note (printed). Attendance is required on Zoom for both lecture and disc but cameras aren't required. As long as you have good notes, I'd say the class is a fairly easy A.
I LOVED this class and Dr. Clewett! He's definitely the kindest and most empathetic professor I've encountered at UCLA in my three years on campus. Dr. Clewett genuinely cares about the material he is teaching and incorporates interesting videos and activities into his lectures to make them more engaging. He is also extremely accommodating and made sure that students felt supported during the political protests on campus in the spring. Overall, I would definitely recommend this course or any other course that Dr. Clewett teaches!
TAKE THIS CLASS! I came into this class extremely nervous considering most people I talked to warned me that most Category A psych courses are really difficult. I expected this class to take up a lot of my time and be really difficult to study for. However, Dr. Clewett made the information incredibly clear and digestible. The lectures were incredibly interactive and helped me stay focused for the entire hour and 15 minutes (e.g. audience participation, guest lecturers, videos, etc.). In the beginning, I heard some complaints about the textbook and mandatory ZAPS, however, that ended up not being so bad. I ended up opting out of the textbook and just paid for the individual ZAPS instead (when buying the ZAPS, make sure to use the exact email listed on your BruinLearn account or else you may experience some access issues). Some people bought the Inquizatives too but I really don’t think they are necessary to be successful in the class. The ZAPS activities themselves were not very demanding at all and I would often be able to finish them during discussion sections. Discussion sections are mandatory but you are able to get 2 excused absences in case anything comes up. I found the discussion sections a great way to reinforce what we learned in class. He also offered extra credit in the form of completing SONA studies. The structure of the class changed throughout the quarter considering all the protests and police activity on campus but it was clear that he made every effort to make sure we felt as much at ease as we possibly could. I really appreciated his efforts and believe him to be one of the most compassionate teachers I had during this quarter. Lastly, I believe the exams were extremely fair. Our midterm was moved online but its structure was very similar to the final exam. They were comprised of multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and labeling questions (labeling parts of the brain, labeling stages of a diagram, etc). Some of the questions were tricky, so it was really important to pay close attention to the wording of the questions. I will say that he allowed us to have an 8x11 page (front and back) of notes for the exam and that also proved to be really helpful. I didn’t really end up using the cheat sheet that much but it definitely put my nerves at ease to have something to reference just in case. Overall, loved the class, and would definitely take another class with Clewett if the opportunity presented itself.
P.S. I had a PLF for this class and that really helped to reinforce the topics we covered in class. 10/10 would recommend!
If you can take this class with anyone take it with Prof Clewett. He's not only a great lecturer but also hilarious and compassionate. His tests were extremely straightforward and he allows a 8x11 cheat sheet front and back - super helpful. There are opportunities that cushion your grade. LOVED how digestible he made this class
Dave is an incredible professor, one of the best at UCLA. He truly cares about each student's learning especially given everything that has happened this quarter. He is understanding but also a brilliant professor and I was learning just because of how engaging his class was. He made cognitive science (a class I previously dropped because the subject matter was so uninteresting to me for PYSCH 85) so interesting with his slides, the mix of videos, activities, and images. I learned because he made it fun to learn, not because of a grade. I feel like I have a strong grasp on many subjects in cog psych now and I apply it to my personal interests in psych overall. I can tell how much effort and time he puts into this course. It's so interesting how he applies his concepts of learning to the slides so we maximize our learning. His weekly tests, discussion section assignments and exams are all carefully formatted to ensure that we are learning and testing our learning, they are a good amount of difficulty but not tricky. I think all students should learn from Dave and I hope he stays at UCLA for a long time.
This class was not bad at all. We had a total of 6 quizzes I believe, and they were online on Bruinlearn. Quizzes were open note, which helped a lot. We also had ZAPs (you have to pay for this) that you do during discussion sections, which are basically free points. Discussion section attendance was mandatory, but you get to do your ZAPs assignment during that time, so it wasn't too bad.
Our midterm and final were done online IN-PERSON, so you brought your laptop into the lecture hall and took the exam online with everyone else. Professor Clewett allowed us one side of a paper for our midterm cheat sheet, and both sides of a paper for the final exam cheat sheet. I personally thought this was enough-- I managed to fit everything onto the page.
He also offered extra credit through SONA studies.
